... why do they not make a case to sell them in, surely risking damage by not?

There are possibilities of modularity with certain construction methods.

Including the addition of extra security facilities.

If anyoe is still playing with their Raspberry Pi, Linux Format magazine has some interesting stuff this month. If you are doing anything interesting with your Pi, why not tell us about it? And is the plural Pis or Pies?

Now winter is coming i may have some time to play, is mine still in the dalek Toble?
It never made it into the Dalek. The Dalek project stalled due to poor Pi/Arduino combined battery life. I think it Gertboard time soon.
It was, however, called Judoon and was emulating an old Ultrix VAX box.

If you want it back, i'll sort it out for you.

Some great stuff there, I'm really glad it's captured some kids imagination. Aiming this at teenagers is perfect, they are starting to thing properly (well, some....) but don't have the annoying distractions like jobs and bills to pay. At 16 I physically modified an amiga 500 using a soldering iron and an xacti knife, making it run more effectively. I'd never have the time for that sort of thing now!

We've got a Pi that we're trying to make work to run Digital Signage on TV screens - its proving a bit entertaining courtesy of Linux but I think we've almost cracked it!

Afternoon folks, bringing this thread back from the dead a bit here....

Thinking of getting either a Pi or Android stick for my birthday to run as a media centre.... have any of you Pi users out there got a similar setup running that can comment on how good / bad it is or give advice?

Tek, didn't you plan to get one and put Raspbmc on it... did you?

I did indeed plan that, then when it arrived I was busy and lent it to Toble who I assume still has it!

I do have an android stick knocking about, used it for a while but once I got a nowTV with plex on I've not used it. It was interesting to play with, it was a full on android system just on a non-touch screen. The controlling of it was a bit odd though, it had tilt sensors to control the mouse. You got your eye on any particular one?

TBH i'm leaning towards XBMC on the Pi - toble if you have any advice then would be much appreciated.

Essentially I want to be able to plug my Ext HDD in and watch movies / pics etc off there but be able to access the drive over my wireless network to put stuff on it i.e. from my phone. Also want to be able to stream stuff over the network from phone to whatever I get. I think either device can do both of those.... oh and I forgot, maybe watch the occasional football stream through the device too.

RE: Raspberry Pi - seems cheap but obviously need hdmi cable, case, sd card and setting it all up are the cons, but then the interface on XBMC looks great and because its one device with one lot of specs then stuff either works on it or it doesn't and the Pi community are all working on the same device.

RE: Android stick - nice compact unit that slots straight into the HDMI so less messing with cables trailing everywhere plus loads of apps although not sure how much I would use. Also big Android community but all working on many devices all slightly different. Also heard a lot of things about over heating, dodgy wi-fi, no 1080p, loads of Chinese fakes etc etc. They also seem more expensive up front for one but apart from the addition of a micro-sd I think that would be about it.

Totally undecided.

As for which Android stick I would get, again I have no idea. Don't want to spend loads but want something half decent with community support.

I have one based on the RK3066 IIRC, not been turned on it about 6 months though. Its in my pile of media streamers I no longer use and should get around to selling. Yes, I literally have a pile of them!

RaspBMC... works perfectly.
I've got one in the bedroom connected to all the hard drives, and another in the living room that shares those drives.
They can be a bit funny about wifi dongles, but the teeny ones that maplin sells work fine.

Tek, tell me when you want yours back.

Update - no closer to deciding between Pi and Android but had a play with XBMC on my Android phone last night, that shiz ROCKS!!!

Installed Ice Films and was watching great quality movies and tv in minutes.

Installed Sports Devil too but couldn't find any working streams on that. My Sky TV gets cancelled today / tomorrow so hopefully I can get some working for tomorrow.

Definitely want XBMC in my life now. Toble - do you find RaspBMC slow on the Pi or does it work ok? Do you run RaspBMC from SD card or usb?

I looked at XBMC, but ended up going the plex route because of the cost of client devices (£8!). May have another look at some point.
