Will the rate cut inflate or deflate the pound?

A cut has been priced into the market so .25% may have no affect on £. A .50% reduction would have more of an impact. I think interest rate changes will have little impact on economy as they are already at historic lows, if there is a need to provide real stimulus it will have to come from Hammond.

So.......

As someone that is looking to remortgage, and wishes to god they hadn't trapped themselves in a 10 year fix at 5.29% nearly 8 years ago (interest rates MUST go up, they can't stay this low! arse), what are the thoughts for the next few years? Fix or tracker?

It'll move up later on, but how much? I've got a 5 year fixed that we took out last year, so I could have benefited slightly today, but not massively. I'd go for a fixed because you know what your payments will be. Could you save enough by paying your early repayment charge and backing out now? Google do a good mortgage comparison site, but watch out for solicitors fees and valuations. We're with Tesco as that's all in the fee. I knocked up a comparison excel template if you'd like it.

You can get a 5 year fix at around 2% or 2 year deal at 1% so the expectation is low rates for a while.

If you opt for a tracker make sure you check it tracks the BOE rate not the lenders SVR, since often the lender will not change there internal rate despite the BOE having moved their rate.

Let me say this about the banks: the banks have no excuse, with today's announcement, not to pass on this cut in Bank Rate and they should write to their customers and make that point.

We'll see....

Philip Hammond is to guarantee billions of pounds of UK government investment after Brexit...

The Treasury is expected to continue its funding beyond the UK’s departure from the EU for all structural and investment fund projects, as long as they are agreed before the autumn statement.

...Current levels of agriculture funding will [also] be guaranteed until 2020

... Universities and researchers will have funds guaranteed

...“We recognise that many organisations across the UK which are in receipt of EU funding, or expect to start receiving funding, want reassurance about the flow of funding they will receive”

Guys! You lost! How about accepting the democratic decision of the British People and stop sulking and instead give some thought to what relationship an Independent United Kingdom should have with Europe and the rest of the world.
