Audacity sound recorder

Does anyone have experience with Audacity or similar progs which allow you to record straight from your sound card? I used it a few years ago to record something from the radio, and I was certain that it was as simple as clicking the record button...this time, however, it doesn't work when I do that. It shows a timeline which moves when you press record, but when I press play the track is completely blank :?:

There may well be some setting or other I need to change on my pc as it's not the same one as when I used it before, but i've looked through all the menus and can't see anything obvious which would affect the recording. Any ideas peeps?

is there a little speaker in your system tray (bottom right, by the clock)? if so, double click it.. go to the Options menu and choose Properties..

it should say "Adjust volume for" followed by 2 options.. choose the "Recording" option, and make sure all of the boxes are ticked.. one of them should be "Wave out" or "Mix" or something..

tick all those boxes and press OK.. you are now looking at the various sources for recording, so make sure that "Wave out" (or "Mix" or whatever) is ticked.. it's usually the last column..

try recording now

The tick boxes i get under 'playback' are 'volume control', 'wave', 'sw synth', 'cd player' (all of which are ticked), and 'input monitor' and 'mono mix' (both unticked). When i ticked them both it added the extra columns and 'input monitor' was muted, so i took the mute off, but it's also greyed out so you can't adjust the volume. The volume for it is already set to about ¾, and when i try to record again there's nowt there!

did you check the settings for "Recording"?
Yeah...both 'line in' and 'microphone' are ticked, and they're the only options i get.
in that case you might not be able to record your soundcard's output, as it's not available as a recording source.. have you defo done it on this computer before, or was it on an old computer?

there's bound to be some software out there that will do it (by installing a virtual audio device or some such), but i don't know anything off the top o' my head i'm afraid..

Whilst hunting about for info i came across this handy site where you can rip youtube vids to your hard drive, just by entering the url into the box. Only took a few seconds to convert a live music thing my mum wanted to play in her car, and it popped out with a shiny .mp3 file that i've emailed to her...and it's free!
