I don't understand the current fixation with this chap, whom I have never heard of before now, but seeing as Wikipedia tells me he is an actor I have moved this thread to Entertainment. :)

I put it in General Chat as, although he was an actor, I suspect that he is justifiably more proud of his time as head of Mencap, rather than the time he spent with his trousers round his ankles, amusing though that was at the time. Not many people can exhibit such levels of prowess in such disparate fields.

Basil's initial reference alludes to the fact that Lord Rix is still remembered as the 'King of Farce'.

Well, given that acting, farce, and dropping one's trousers are all forms of entertainment, I would suggest that these are Baron Rix's primary achievements, so I'll leave the the thread where it is. :)

Happy enough with that.

Primary in the sense that they came first, but his work with Mencap transcends all of that, I think....

I always assumed that Sir Baron Brian appeared in 'no sex please we're british' but it seems not, surely it was a most tragic casting error.....:xmas:

At the risk of going off topic on a thread that was originally on topic (iyswim!!!!) - I agree, but so few people know of his involvement his work and dedication is lost to the farces :(

A copy of his Lordship's semi-auto-biography - Tour de Farce - is available for a mere fifty shillings in the Hospice shop by the old Post Office. On the top shelf, naturally.

Sad news.

Jan Tregelles, chief executive of Mencap, said:

"When Lord Rix's daughter, Shelley, was born with a learning disability he and his wife Elspet were told to put her away, and forget about her.

"This started a quest lasting over 60 years to make the world a better place for all those with a learning disability."

"His unique charm, personality and passion have been invaluable in helping Mencap grow. Lord Rix made a real difference but there is still so much more to be done.

"We will not stop until people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and fully included in our society. That would be the most fitting tribute that we could pay to such an extraordinary man."

I went to see "Flying Feathers", by Derek Benfield, last night.

A production much in the style of Brian Rix's performances. Lots of closely timed entrances and exits, costume features being added and removed, two corpses (or maybe not?), a chief constable trying to shoot a vicar - all that sort of stuff.
