The ISP Be will be offering a service to Stafford from May this year.

22 meg download 2.5 meg upload on the pro package for £22.
Cheaper and faster than NTL.
All the deals look to be good value for money

Been keeping an eye on them for a while, glad they're finally reaching us! Of course, true speeds remain to be seen, but other parts of the country are giving good reports.

They are honest and open about the fact your speed is dependant on how far from the exchange you are, which is more than can be said of others
they say if you're around 2 Km from the exchange you should get at least 15 meg.
That's still a good speed and they have a higher upload than Virgin ( should help the ratio ;) )

i love ntl/virgin internet.. their customer service sucks balls, probably on par with microsoft, but i've never had a problem with the actual service.. it's great watching utorrent consistently hit over 1.1mb/s download..

however, it's hard to argue with 2.5mbps upload! if i'm doing my maths right, that's about 300k/s  like you say, foo - will do wonders for one's ratio..

i shall be keeping my eye on this, fo' sho!

Hang on a sec, let me get this straight. Virgin will prioritise traffic to the customer depending on how much the content supplier pays them? So if the BBC coughed up you'd get super quick iplayer, but if they didn't then chances are iplayer would be faster using other providers?

Thats virtually extortion! And ensures virgin never get another penny of my money, if I was paying for my service I'd be pretty annoyed!

Virgin have got too big for their own boots - surely nobody is daft enough to go through with a crazy idea like this?

Yes mate that's essentially it. Means a lot for streaming media, torrents, ecommerce etc. etc. basically everything on the web will be extorted by these fu*ktards.

The other thing that really gets me about this is at the moment anyone with a decent idea and a small amount of resources can run a business online and compete world wide with large companies (to a degree) but if Virgin and other ISP's go down this line it's bye-bye to the little guys. The only content and service providers we will be able to use will be big corporate ventures backed by big money delivering content aimed and one thing: Making money. Maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of this but this means very very bad things in my eyes.

If virgin set a precedent and other service providers follow suit the internet as we know it may be DOOMED! Da Da DaaaaAAAA!

Or we could all make our selves heard by using other ISP’s. Car Phone ware house recently spoke out against another issue; the record industry's BPI and the UK Government trying to get ISP’s to police file sharing. Car phone warehouse told them it isn’t their job to be policing the net. I’d assume they’d take a similar stance on net neutrality but as this would make them more money not cost them money maybe they'll do a virgin too.

haha

Virgin Media (VM) today moved to calm fears that it will start throttling web video from providers who refuse to hand over a levy to deliver their content.

A spokesman for the firm said it does not intend to hinder access to content providers who do not pay. Rather, VM could offer content providers deals to upgrade their provisioning if they want to ensure best access to to broadband subscribers.
