I had a little wander round this morning. The church is rather nice.

Its spire is particularly impressive.

This house opposite the church stands out - I have a vague idea that it might have been moved to the current location, but I could be thinking of somewhere else..?

I notice that it says "For Those Who Served". Was Bednall a Thankful Village?

No it wasn't a thankful village, Bednall lost men in both wars.

The story of the memorial is as follows, should anyone be interested.

I used to be on the committee of Friends of Bednall , a small community group that organised fund raising events and any profits were used to improve areas of the village.
In 2014 the parish council gave the village a bench to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of The Great War.
We weren't sure where to put it so we decided on a large grass verge on the edge of the village.

It looked a bit lost just plonked there so we decided that we'd build a wall behind it.
We asked the villagers if they had any Sandstone in the garden that they didn't want and if so to leave it on the verge.
Within a week we had a pile big enough to make the wall. My friend Grete said she'd watched some workmen in her garden build a wall and reckoned it was easy. She showed me how to mix cement (the woman who lived in the nearest house kept bringing up buckets of water to mix it with). There were about six people helping and the wall got built.

We then decided to put some brick edging and gravel down ( we paid a brickie for that) we used some of the money that we'd raised.
Someone in the village then donated a piece of Stone that he thought would make a nice memorial. By chance another lady in the village had a son in law who was a stonemason and he engraved it for free.
We thought it more fitting to remember all those who had served in the war, not just those who died, hence the wording.
So a village coming together and helping made our small memorial area.

I had a further wander around this morning - I noticed that the church is fairly festooned with carved faces, many too high for the lens that I had with me - a further visit may be necessary.

These were either side of the main doorway.

I did take the opportunity to read the current edition of Bednall Banter.

I see that they have a Bath Social Group, which sounds a bit risqué.

A Bednall village e mail came round last night.....

“Have you lost your chicken? A chicken was found wandering round the church with a blue tag on its leg. It’s currently laying eggs in Debs garden”

Yes, this was news and warranted much village discussion.
It’s another world really.
