It was the old style Guinness labels with numbers on that were reputed to have been used as tax discs. Think this type of label was in use until the early '50s

Yes, earlier than I thought.
According to Paul Brickhill's "Reach For The Sky" book about legless fighter pilot Douglas Bader who observed that a tax disc showed a more than passing likeness to the then current label on a bottle of Guinness Bader and replaced his tax disc with a Guinness label and it was never picked up on even though, as also portrayed in the film, he was not popular with any local constabulary and was forever being stopped by them.
