This will seem like a daft question but I wasnt born and bred in the town, where specifically was Bingley Hall?

It was, and presumably still is, the big shed at the County Showground - https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=stafford uk&hl=en&ll=52.824733,-2.06533&spn=0.001357,0.002411&hnear=Stafford, United Kingdom&gl=uk&t=h&z=19 - site of many a high-profile pop/rock concert in the 70s/80s...

Maybe the sign is still there?

Often a point of confusion with the other Bingley Hall down Brum way. Stafford's was sometimes called New Bingley Hall in an effort to differentiate the two - but this just confused things even more as the 'New' one was the Birmingham one, really, I believe...

Please don't confuse it tho with The New Bingley Hall in Brum. Went there a couple of Christmasses agao with work. What a load of cobblers that was! Food were undercooked, friend had a whole gravy boat tipped over her. Farce from start to finish.

I lived in Coventry for many years and know Bingley Hall as a stately type home near Brum, I believe it burnt down in the 80s and the International Convention Centre is built where Bingley Hall stood. Im sure I went to a hotel once with the same name and had a horrific meal there!

So what happened then? Stafford seemed to be a major stop off point for bands in the 70's and then nothing.

It wasn't the best of venues - the acoustics hardly justified the use of the word - other venues became available and the era of giant concerts faded a bit at the same time.

I only attended one and a half times. Once inside for Thin Lizzy and, after being appalled by that event, once more by taking a picnic up and sitting out in the field at the back for Z Z Top.

Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Kiss, Rush, The Police. Some bands I've seen at Bingley Hall. It was a great concert venue.

Boston/Kansas, possibly both - Santana, Abba, Barry Manilow, Pink Floyd, Stranglers, Jam, Bob Marley, Queen, AC/DC with Def Leppard, David Bowie, Genesis, Rolling Stones, Eagles...

Before my time at The Swan, but a number of the staff can recall a number of these people stopping at The Swan, I suppose what was the downfall of Bingley Hall must have been the opening of the NEC possibly?

Must have been fantastic for Staffords Hotel trade back then!

Tillington Hall was a popular place for bands to stay. I met David Coverdale, Bernie Marsden and Jon Lord when they stayed there.

Was at that Yes gig, a mate turned up at home about two hours prior with a spare ticket.
Went to see The Stones and left after about half an hour.

I have only ever seen one live concert and that was as a 5 year old somewhere in Hanley, to see Slim Whitman :(
I do have a mate who was the personal assistant to Rush though :)

Should I win the lottery I will buy a place in Stafford and turn it into the best music venue and have decent live bands playing! Suggestions open for venue, I’m thinking that place falling down on Marston rd or that place on eastgate street next to the bike shop that’s empty!
