When I tell people an entire file such as a movie or a picture is all just "1's and zeros" they think I'm mad.

What can BT offer you on fibre? I was on the 60Mb package and its costing me less for fibre at around 75/15 speeds. The upstream was the deal clincher for me, I have a dozen media boxes spread around town that stream from me!

Nothing. Fibre is (apparently) not available where I live.

In the good old days of writing coding sheets, a zero had a horizontal bar over the top of it

Then it had the bar inside it..

There are 10 types of people, those who can understand binary and those who can't (and how many years has that one been around)

I had customers in Derrington a few years ago that cancelled their ADSL broadband as the 0.3Mb was totally unacceptable! They all ended up using three dongles as that was their best option. I don't know if things have changed now out there or not.

We live in Derrington. The village isn't that far from the exchange by line of site, bit further by road. But the phone lines take the scenic route, hence I think it is 7km.

However our ADSL wasn't that bad. We had just under a 1mb connection for download, and about 0.5mb for uploads (not that bad).

We were told that there were 2 physical lines into the village, one of which was pretty rubbish. If you were routed through one you were OK, routed through the other you were stuffed.

However we now have FTTC (for the last 2 years). The cabinet is at the A518 end of the village, and we are at the other end. We get about 43mb download and about 7mb upload now.

All the best

Help...I live in a village with dire Internet.

What is ADSL?
What do you mean by 2 physical lines?

What is FTTC?

What do you mean by a cabinet at the end of the road?

ADSL is broadband down a phone line - up to about 8MB, if you're very lucky - and central - I'm on the edge of town and get 3.5.

Two physical lines just means that there's two routes to that location - one will be better than the other, but there can be an element of luck in which one you end up using.

FTTC is fibre to the cabinet - much faster - if it's actually available where you are.

Cabinet at the end of the road is just that - a (usually) green steel box where connections can be made for distribution to local houses.

Quiz your neighbours and see if better things are possible....

Oh thank you.

One person was totally loved up, and in the most wonderful relationship.

But he wont move in with her because the Internet in Bednall is cr*p.
