These do require a power supply for the charging facility, but Husqvarna do a solar powered one. It occurs to me that they could be programmed with their 'home' location and could then realise if they had been stolen. Being solar powered, they could then escape and make their way home, using a sat-nav type device..

Scarily enough we discussed these ideas at length at work, in 1999! It started with the robot vacuum cleaner, we discussed the sensors needed etc. and how it could be powered. The idea was it would wait til you were at work then tidy up. We were trying to work out the same for a lawnmower but couldn't work out how to reliably tell the edge of the lawn without burying some form of low current cable around the area to be mowed.

We then finished our coffe break and forgot about it, a few years later and some bugger has invented them! The next day we discussed a tamagotchi assassin, the plan being to pull up outside schools and kill every one of the buggers in a playground :D

EDIT: In line with the finding their way home malarky, we also thought about giving it the GPS of mates lawns so it could toddle off and do them as well. The plans for a beer carrying device for payment never got off the ground.
