How old are the kids? A few years ago for a friend's daughter's 13th (if I remember rightly) birthday we took four adults and 6 kids to the Big Wok on Wrottesly Street for Saturday lunch, the kids felt proper grown up because we let them have their own table (not too far from ours though) £5 a head all you can eat buffet. I've never come away from there saying "Wow, that was the best Chinese ever" but it's not at all bad for the price. Think it's about £6 now and possibly a quid or two dearer after tea time.

Oh & if going at lunchtime it's worth ringing ahead to book as the queue is often between 50 & 100 yards down the street. Book a table and walk right in, it's also worth it for the dirty looks from the first dozen or so at the head of the queue.

How brave are you ... Chung Ying is a traditional restaurant which serves dim sum as well as the more usual beef in black bean sauce, etc.

This Sunday (10th February) is New Year's Day in the lunar calendar. Chinatown in Birmingham will be pretty busy as they have a few things going on. If you go say "Kung Hei Fat Choi" to the Chinese ... it is what is said for Chinese New Year. I lived in Hong Kong for a few years, so know a bit about Chinese food and celebrations!

Don't expect frills if you go to the Big Wok, it's very much like a canteen but a very friendly place,
they will sing Happy Birthday if you let them know. Empty plate collection appears to be very brisk
but the waiters/waitresses seem to appear from nowhere and clear your table ready for your
next course.

I particularly like it because it gives kids the chance to make their own choices and Trumpet is
right: I once heard 2 eight year olds discussing the joys of making tempura batter from ultra
cold sparkling water...the tempura battered sweet potato is excellent there.

The one thing the management don't like is waste and that is understandable. If it's the
first time your children have been there, a little guidance might not go amiss.

If you want to go a bit further (physically and financially), Jimmy Spices (just off Broad
Street and therefore not in China Town) is also very good...(Google: Jimmy Spices).

They do food from: Europe, The Americas, Far East, Middle East and India and, the
last time I was there, the mains were in what looked like hand beaten copper bowls,
very pleasing!!

Have a great day with them!!....Ecker.

Food quality in the big wok isn't great but you cant argue with the price. The dim sum place opposite is excellent. Be careful though they only serve dim sum during certain times of the day. I think due to being made fresh.

Although not in china town it is near by... wagamama, love the place. Got to give it a go if you haven't been before, Japanese chain. Its not fish as you would stereo-typically think.
