Visiting Gurly this weekend found a new favourite watering hole in Newbury, The Catherine Wheel

Apart from the Lilleys rubbish, a great selection.
We were in that pub last weekend ☺️

I enjoyed the Avocet ale but it wasn't quite cider o'clock so stuck to the beers.

The Monument is also worth a visit with good beers and great music.

Here's my photo of the cider board. Spot the difference 😂

Cus I've found a pub over the road from our hotel actually selling Dry Blackthorn cider on draught. Lived on that in my younger days , but not see it on draught for years. :pint:

(And hubby got a Courage Directors that he's not seen in years as well)

Might have to move down here to Weymouth next ! 🤣

Forgot all about woodpecker! Back when many bars sold a sweet or a dry, instead of crap cider or crap cider and black!

I think the two main Bulmers ciders were Woodpecker (sweet) and Strongbow (dry).
Taunton might have been the next biggest producer with their Autumn Gold (sweet) and Dry Blackthorn.
There was also Gaymers and Whiteways, while Westons became better known.

Autumn Gold is around in most places now ( and Autumnn Haze, the flatter cloudier and which I don't lke)

Don't see Magners around much lately. Just the odd place with it in bottles. Mostly seen Magners fruit one on draught.

Aspalls , Stowford Press, Autumn Gold & Inches are the main ones In Worcester. ( only seen Inches in our hotel bar out of those 3 around Weymouth )

On Inches at the moment in hotel bar.

Enjoyed a couple of pints of Blackthorn before tea across the road , but they forecast being rammed for England match after or would have been back there for more. They also sold Autumn Gold .

Blackthorn seemed to affect me more than ohers tonight ( was on an empty stomach though 😂)

If we hadn't booked evening meal in hotel tonight ( because of footie) we'd have stayed for more and probably suffered in morning ( well me , hubby restricted by cardiologist on liquid intake at mo, so just me drinking his share as well... ).

I've only seen Strongbow on draught in Worcester in wetherspoons. Quite a few others sell the fruity versions but not the original ' normal' Strongbow.
The Strongbow in The Picture House , Stafford always seemed 'frothy' when I had it and not so enjoyable.
They keep it good in The Crown ,Worcester Spoons and always comes out sparkling.

Gone native and drinking Latvian ciders lately, had a rather interesting hopped one last night and there is a meadow version that has 3 different flowers used in the brewing which was quite sweet but rather easy to drink.

@Thehooperman if we actually have a car to drive home I'll bring some for the bikes in September!

Back to the hangover days.... even though the pub darts team fed us cake & pork pies tonight, don't think that'll soak all tonight's Blackthorn up!

On another note , a Guiness bar pump had a harp. Hubby reckons Guiness is part of 'Harp' as in " Harp, stay sharp to the bottom of the glass: advert

Harp is a Guinness product. All part of Diageo now.

Harp was launched in 1960 by Guinness but from 1961 was part of a consortium with Courage and Scottish & Newcastle each having a quarter share. After Dundalk it was also brewed in Alton, Manchester and Edinburgh. I remember it also being the keg lager for smaller brewers including Banks's and Greene King.

Funnily enough I found a bottle of the quince cider, that you gave me, amongst the bottles I brought up to Scotland.

It went down rather well with the lamb tagine I made yesterday.

Having had some work to do today in the nearest acceptable pub, to ready the venue for the Longest Day event, I took the opportunity to record the Harp pump.

On this island, Harp is very much for the northern market, really in the nine counties of Ulster, for various historical reasons. It would be unusual to see it 'plumbed in' this far south, but the cheery landlord stocks it, as, in his days at St James's Gate, he was involved in transferring the production arrangement down to there, when the original Dundalk facilities ended production.

And I now also know who I've got in the Euro draw...
