Pragues a nice city. And yes, I had my wallet nicked by a 'ho, and no, I wasn't soliciting her. In fact, I've heard of at least 2 other people who've had the same thing happen, one saw it coming, the other was as unlucky as I was.

For the tl;dr crowd amongst you: pros - beer and architecture, cons - food and thieving hookers.

In terms of hotels, we just went to the hotel place at the airport and booked a room. They turned out to be dicks, so the next day we moved on - just wandered round until we found a likely looking 'pension', and it was alright. You can walk most places, but get a streetmap as everywhere looks the same. Also, the underground is good, cheap and easy to use.

To be honest, there's not a huge amount of things to do there but wander around and look at the awesome architecture, and crawl the numerous bars serving 11% Staropramen and lovely Absinthe. It's worth spending a day up in the old town, where there are amazing gold cladded cathedrals. And more bars.

Be warned - the food is the worst in Europe. There's something deeply wrong with Czech's tastebuds. I guess that's what happens when you drink beer at breakfast, which they do. Everything is deep fried, but smells like they've not changed the oil since the Soviets left. Everything comes with a crap little salad, and EVERYTHING comes sprinkled with raw horseradish and caraway seeds. I would recommend being drunk at all mealtimes. DO NOT EAT AT PRAGUE AIRPORT! You're as well off eating in a little bar as an expensive restaurant, as the food will be equally revolting. I'm veggie and have never eaten so much musty, deep fried cheese in my life.

There's a really good night club called the Roxy/Ritzy (I was drunk) - it's well known and in the centre of the 'new' side of the river and is actually really, really good. Though you won't be able to buy anything :ninja:, unless you have better luck than we did.

Best thing to do, is visit a Jazz Bar. All the good ones are on the 'old' side of the bridge. Even if you don't like Jazz (which I'm generally not a fan) they are really entertaining places, with really friendly chatty crowds, cheap beer, waitress services. And it's good jazz, not wanky jazz noodling.

Recommended reading: The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, you'll understand the Czech's mindset a little better. And why they drink so very much.

To be honest, I was so very drunk, the whole trip is a bit of a haze. Have fun!

Edit: Thanks for the custom Bobby :haw:

this sounds like great fun! although the potential for regrettable drunken buffoonery would be worrysome lol

lol i thought this was a euphemism for something else, until i read on and realised that you actually meant bars which played jazz :v:

I recommend a trip up the tower in the Old Town Square - the view of the buildings is fantastic as well as getting a good look at the Jan Hus statue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Hus). The Charles Bridge is great as is a tour of the government building. I saw some of the best theatre anywhere at the "National Marionette Theatre" for a very good ticket price.

Avoid anything touristy - take the "Literary Pub Tour" if you can.

Be careful not to end up arriving home with a cardboard box full of shards if you buy some crystal glassware.

Prague is beautiful - you will love it!

How did it all go? I've been a few times. The National Technical Museum and the Aircraft Museum out at Kbely airfield are good if you like that sort of thing. There is a lovely little Tibetan-run veggie eatery up by the castle - Maly Buddha on Uvoz, opposite the Swedish Embassy. There is a spot-on pub/bookshop in Tynska off the old town square. there's hardly a sign and it looks like your going into someone's backyard, but it's a good place. Be prepared for things to be closed or at a reduced service on Mondays. The nicest beer is Krusovice Musketyr, hunt it down. I thought the food was OK, but my mate who lives there thinks the bread is foul. I don't know about hotels, but I know a man who does and I've been badgering him to join the forum. I'll lean on him again tomorrow night.
