De cluttering help.

Ok so im a bit of a hoarder.. I've been giving loads to Katherine house. And to local animal charities. We are doing some work to our garage Which is about 40 ft Long so u can imagine a hoarders paradise. It's my kids stuff I need to get rid of as Well. How do others let go.. im struggling.

Ps the garage was split into 3. We have knocked a wall down to make it into 2 rooms. So technically one was a storage room.get the picture..

Gave the kids left home? You ought to say come and get it or it's going to the tip. A car boot is a good way of getting rid and earning s few pennies at the same time, I do one every year or two and always walk away with £100 at the end of it. Though everyone wants a bargain at the boot sale so it's worth doing a bit of research in eBay first to see what things go for. Good luck

No lads still at home a bit grown up for the Indiana Jones stuff. I have done a carboot before. Could not believe the cheek of people. But not got time to do it.

I know exactly what you mean, I've got loads of stuff I don't need that is too good to throw out, but the thought of doing a car boot fills me dread, I've done one before and I can't face one again.

I can't burn it .its also me letting go is a problem .I can't get rid of my old vynal albums .I still got my Alice Coopper with the$,100 dollar bill inside.my 17 year old was amused

EBay all the good stuff and use the proceeds to treat yourself possibly something to fill the empty space in garage :-D

I've no idea I have to build myself up to it. A lot of things have nostalgia attached or I'm convinced I'll need it at some point.
Doesn't help that I have something for years it sits in a box never touched. We get rid or more accurately my oh mercilessly gets rid, a short time later we need it. Half the time it results in having to go buy a new what ever it was. This really doesn't help with my 'don't throw stuff out' compulsion.
You mentioned Indiana Jones and getting rid, my first thought was I want it pmsl.

I find eBay very time consuming, especially for the smaller stuff and now eBay take a cut of the postage as well as the sales total combined with the complete lack of seller protection it seems more hassle than it's worth. For the bigger collection stuff Gumtree seems to be taking off and it's all free. Preloved works on the same basis and I think it's a £5 one fee per year.

Keep giving it to charity! We've recently cleared an elderly relatives house and distributed the stuff round the charity shops of Stafford, confident in the knowledge that the old relative would have been happy with that. It's not easy to start, but once we got going I knew it was the right thing to do. Good luck.

P.S Don't expect the charity shops to show any gratitude, only KH by the tip managed that!!

PPS. My teenage daughter is now really into vinyl, so if you are thinking of rehoming it she'd be very interested

How to let go of it = take photographs of it.... that way you still have the memory but a photo takes up much less space.

Thanks. I've got a lot to think about. Re the vinyl. That's something I can't let go of. They will probably be buried with me. I give to KH and a face book page called fur babies.(local) Will try gumtree thanks..

Just a quick note, but I've always find it useful to donate items to the Shaw Trust on the Currys retail park as you can park right outside the door. Can't do that for many charity shops in Stafford.

I do try to de clutter but it’s very had to get rid of things that you have either been given or brought because you wanted it.


I had a friend visit my house recently for the first time, I said the usual (don't look at the mess) casually said because I hadn't really tided up, and she said "you’ll be alright when you de clutter - you’ve just got too many things really". It certainly made me look at all the things I do have that I don’t actually need, or have any use for - things that are just sitting there for no reason at all. Ornaments that the kids have given me I could put them in the loft but there is no room because of all their toys from when they were littleare up there


I’ve tried E bay its a hassle and I don’t have time to photo and list things. it's best give them to a family member who had kids it’s their clutter then.
Or the other thing i tell the kids is - when i pop me cloggs it will be their cluttter and i won't care.

Noah, you are my hero! It broke my heart when I had de-cluttering forced upon me. I lost things that can't be replaced and to this day I miss them. It would have been fair enough had I been heading into Mr Trebus territory but I was a long long way from that and was at the mercy of a minimalist busybody with more power than someone with their mindset should ever have.
I live in fear of it now, My dragon collection that once lived happily on shelves now languishes in the loft because apparently shelves that hold more than a vase artfully displayed ''make the room look cluttered'' and ''do you really need them?''

Also, are you sure the dragons are OK in the loft? Do they get enough sunlight to make vitamin D up there? Exercise? And I'm intrigued to hear that they previously lived on shelves. Knew cats are very fond of shelves, but didn't know dragons are funny that way as well.
