Why have we started naming storms?

When the first one was named the Met office announced it was to raise public awareness and thus hopefully ensure people were prepared and kept safe.
Alternatively, quick scroll through your Facebook feed would do the trick - slightest extreme of weather always results in a long stream of weather related statuses.
