My dad (who is not really tec minded) has downloaded Advast free anti virus software?

Im always a 'nothing is free' kinda girl - but he reckons he has been told its the best - but I think - if its free why do we all pay for our virus software?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

AVG - good and free
NOD32 - free 'trial' but about $40 per year - that is the daddy though.

You're best to ask is WMR. He will no doubt offer advice in this thread (he's a helpful chap like that :) )

Another thread I started called something along the lines of "Which free anti-virus" goes into this in greater detail.
Avast rates quite well... and "we" don't all pay for our anti-virus at all.... I'd say 75% or more of people use free ones available online. Just my opinion, there's not enough extra protection given on the paid for versions to make them worth the purchase ;)

If he's chosen avast it's quite good. Tell him to also install the free Malwarebytes anti-malware and run a scan each week with that also for best results.

I use free antivirus. I don't pay for it.

One thing I would say however, imho NOD32 is FAR superior to Avast/AVG, but in most situations it's overkill.

It depends on what you are doing with your PC. If you're surfing Iplayer and the darkest place you visit is surfthechannel, the free solutions (inc malwarebytes) are more than sufficient.

:) just my 2p

Add me to the positive endorsement, AVG and zone alarm are the only ones I'ved use since forever, no virus or baddies get on my comp at all.
