Neighbours' fury as milk vending machine 'attracts drug-dealers and boy racers'

The Milk Stop has been opened at a Staffordshire pub without planning permission

A milk vending machine installed at a village pub without planning permission is being blamed for anti-social behaviour. The Milk Stop allows customers to buy and bottle milk inside a former smoking shelter at The Hollybush Inn, in Seighford, near Stafford.

Now retrospective planning permission is wanted to change the use of the timber smoking shelter. But the application has sparked objections from villagers.

Stafford Borough Council is expected to rule on the application within weeks.

One Main Road resident said: "The Milk Stop relocated to The Hollybush Inn in March 2021 and there have been numerous instances of excessive noise from vehicles parking on the car park and using the Milk Stop. Engines were left running, loud music left playing from car sound systems, and loud revving of engines as the car park became a meeting point for people.

"It then became apparent that the car park was being used by groups of people doing wheelies so the sound of screeching tyres and loud revving increased. Also footballs being kicked against the wall of our property which backs on to the car park. Drug dealing also became an issue, which we witnessed by looking from our bedroom window."

Another Main Road resident said: "This building has been operating as a vending shop for the last 18 months so I presume it has not had planning permission to do this. Since this has been in operation, it has attracted people from outside the area resulting in the late-night excessive revving of car engines, footballs being kicked against adjacent property, and walls and doors being knocked late at night."

The Hollybush Inn building dates back to the 17th century and it is Grade-II listed. More than a decade ago villagers teamed up to save their local from closure and redevelopment by buying and renovating it.

The planning application states: "The Milk Stop will provide locally-produced milk which has low transport mileage, along with reusable glass bottles which helps to reduce the carbon footprint of both the business and users. This is a local producer providing a high-quality product to the surrounding community.

"The development re-uses the existing timber constructed smoking shelter which has a polycarbonate roof and was originally open in two sides. Electric lighting and radiant heaters were provided.

"The Milk Stop has been painted in an agriculture dairy light blue with a dark blue finish to the frame of the former shelter. Outside the development there is a decorated promotional full-size model cow.

"Following advice from the conservation officer the cow is to be removed from the site. The light blue colour is to be replaced with a dark grey as used in other conservation areas."

Don’t cheek your Eld ers
Yes, I remember an Eld, Margaret I think, of Seighford who was a director of Morrells Brewery of Oxford which coincidently is only a few miles north of Morlands Brewery of Abingdon which was mentioned only a couple of days ago on the Aviation Videos topic.

I’m struggling to believe that the behaviour is caused by a bloody milk vending machine…

“Oi lads let’s go show that other lot how ‘ard we are… get some calcium too innit?”

The colour of the paint just tipped them over the edge.

People don't realise how loud their car stereos are sometimes though. You don't have to be a stereotypical boy racer with a modded car to have music thumping out.

I used to live just outside Seighford, I’m certain I know who’s complaining… it’s always the same few that are never happy🙄

The irony is that the buffalo milk was sold from the farm. Then the nimby minority started complaining that some old covenant said they could sell the milk but not the milkshake flavour from the farm site, so the options were stop or move……and that’s how it ended up at the pub in the first place…..and the same people are still moaning about it…. It’s in the wrong place/it’s too blue/ it’s too drug dealery 🤦🏻‍♀️

The dairy industry had a habit of attracting the wrong sort...

The Craggy Island CI number plates are actually real, but they were issued far inland - in fact, where I am currently holed up.

Although you don't see too many these days, there are still a few around - and I did catch one at the tractor run the other day.
