To my eyes, Eastgate Street has always been a bit of a dump. There used to be a halfway decent chippy, as I recall but that was nearly 50 years ago. The only place I go to their now is Sliwinski's from time to time...
Yes, Groucott's chip shop with four portion sizes of chips, 12p worth being nearly half a carrier bag.
I think they also did frozen food, probably in another building.
Eastgate Street would have been more of a "dump" without all the lime trees.

That's the one, I'd been racking my brains to remember the name.

For me the Pen and Wig and other names will always be the Sheridan. I remember Groucott's Chip shop by the bus stop (along a bit from the William Salt Library.) In fact I remember that chip shop being more or less opposite (where the cop shop is now) together with a pet shop and a Chinese laundry. Of course this is long ago, when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. :P

Always the Sheridan.
Yes, not Dappers, the Pen and Wig, Forester and Firkin or Theatre Bar, the latter being most ridiculous as it's neither in a Theatre nor a Bar.

I use quite a bit on Eastgate St- my son's barbers, my dentists, Miss Millicent's and the vintage shop next to it. I've brought stuff from the home brew shop and it's often my way in and out of town if I'm heading to Too Fat Golbins for something. Opening it up will help hugely I imagine, especially with the William Salt library / Hermitage Center expanding.

ST16 Represent.
It was a pub not a bar and it served drinks all day and for all, not just those attending the theatre opposite.
What's the difference, it's terminology isn't it? Of course it was open to all and not just restricted to theatre goers but it acts as a prompt.

I said Theatre Bar is "ridiculous" because it's very misleading.

Oops, forgot the Gatehouse is on Eastgate Street. For some reason I think of it as being on Market Street. So that's another thing I use on there then.

I well remember the Folk Club there on Sunday evenings during the 1980s but have rarely used it since then, Mark Steel being the last time.

The trees in Eastgate are excellent and best viewed from The Shrewsbury Arms after 3 pints of Golden Thread and a tiger bread cheese and onion bap and a bag of cheese and onion crisps

Eastgate St on-street parking, now home to the Deliveroo hierarchy - how much do they get per Deliveroo?

Yes was quite a regular in the Sheridan myself .But a lasting memory for me was having four pints of Dogboulter in one session in I think the Forrester and Firkin.
Was not well after that.

To be fair, within living memory, Eastgate Street and its immediate environs used to be quite a busy area in the 'night time economy', as we talk about these days - the Vine, the Bankhouse, Ye Olde Rose & Crown, the Sheridan, the Gatehouse, the County Officers', the British Legion, the Labour Club, the Shrewsbury Arms, the Assembly Rooms, the Nelson and the Unicorn - plus the chippy, the takeaway and the café by the bus stops. If the area is going to be 'regenerated', then it is an aspect that might be worth considering within the whole.

It's not what it was when kept by Fred and Freda Leese but Black Country Ales have done a good job with 'the Shrew' and it's still a proper pub frequented by proper pub men.

Ah yes, Dogbolter.
I was given a case of it and still have a few bottles, unusually with the label painted on in red rather than being paper.
