Eastgate Regeneration Scheme.

To be fair, within living memory, Eastgate Street and its immediate environs used to be quite a busy area in the 'night time economy', as we talk about these days - the Vine, the Bankhouse, Ye Olde Rose & Crown, the Sheridan, the Gatehouse, the County Officers', the British Legion, the Labour Club, the Shrewsbury Arms, the Assembly Rooms, the Nelson and the Unicorn - plus the chippy, the takeaway and the café by the bus stops. If the area is going to be 'regenerated', then it is an aspect that might be worth considering within the whole.
Yes, sadly we'll never see the likes of those times again.

Why does every ruddy thing on this Forum have to turn into a conversation about fkn pubs?!

As a kid I'd wait at the bus stop across the road from the original Groucott's Chip shop. Then the Midland Red S93 would come along and carry us up the Lammascote Road, across the Riverway Roundabout and up the Weston Road, turning left into Westhead Avenue then proceeding via John Street to Smallman Street where I got off.
It then went up Blackiston St to Read Avenue and Douglas Road West before turning around on the RAF married quarters.

Going up the Weston Road it passed the Gate and the Prince of Wales .....(OH SHIT I didn't mean to mention the pubs !!)

Woman I used work with, her Mum was manageress of Groucotts chippy. They lived in the flat above. Everything used to smell of chip fat. Even her school books.

There used to be another chippy further up toward the town. A little pokey place roughly opposite the Borough Hall.* I've looked on Google Earth but I can't quite place it exactly.

* Gatehouse Theatre my arse .... it's the Borough Hall. :P What's carved in stone either side of the main entrance you heathens.:lol::facepalm::heyhey:

It's not what it was when kept by Fred and Freda Leese but Black Country Ales have done a good job with 'the Shrew' and it's still a proper pub frequented by proper pub men.
Ah, a pub I wouldn't be welcome in, excellent.

For some reason I have a real soft spot for Eastgate Street, it's got such a nice feel to it, and the bottom (less visited) end especially.

I used to enjoy showing people what was behind this door; after a night at The Nelson I showed some friends and we almost didn't get out as the handle was upside down...

Like Lucy I also have a soft spot for Eastgate street. I think it is ripe for regeneration. It's got a good atmosphere with it's slightly less developed buildings. Anything that can be done to give it an injection of life is fine by me.

Last time I was in Eastgate street I was shocked to see Ma T’s café had closed so I popped along to see what there was in Resales just to find it was closed also.
What’s happening to Stafford?
Online shopping...

Yes, given a choice I doubt if many people would opt for Starbucks or Costa rather than Mrs T's.

"ripe for regeneration" but be careful what you wish for.
I remember Borough Market in London with proper pubs like the Wheatsheaf before "regeneration" but now it's full of tourists and stalls selling loaves of bread for £6 or more.

I've found 'the Shrew' to be welcoming to all, as all pubs should be.
