Electric off-road skateboards over Cannock Chase.

As if there weren't enough hazards over the chase, we now have segways zooming about. https://goape.co.uk/locations/cannock-chase/forest-segway

This was not in a quiet area either. They were hurtling along at 15mph or so down the paths by Fairoak Pools. This is completely inappropriate given all the kids, dogs, prams and people running about.
I was knocked flying by one of the electric scooter things last year, they're nearly soundless, no lights and move at a rapid speed. I imagine segways are the same...they should only be on designated paths in my opinion.

I almost hit one this morning, no lights, dark clothing. Who would have been at fault if I'd collided with it? He/she/it is lucky I have good brakes on the car.

You would be, the same as me coming out the top of my rd at 6.20am, Screwfix employees on bike & scooters, no lights, no hi Viz going straight across the top of the rd , left to right without looking to see if a car is coming up the rd.

It was around that time this morning, but a Pets at Home employee, they have all been given backpacks with the company logo on. I think the youngest might know them. They're on the same shift.

These should really be in a controlled environment, to be honest… like on the Go Ape grounds within the Chase if that’s a thing

Boards… honestly skateboarding in a busy area is just a bad idea in general, never mind with an electric board. They’re very momentum based and not the easiest things to do an on-the-spot brake with either, riding them round the Chase is damn stupid.

Regarding electric scooters… the rental scheme really has given them a terrible reputation (and led to a lot of people getting into bad habits). People left them wherever, let kids ride them after authorising the account with the parent’s details, etc. However there are also people who use them without being a menace to society too... One of my staff uses one as his method of transportation to and from work because for various medical reasons he can’t ride a bike and walking is out of the question for the same reason.

People will be twats whatever you do though really, I remember kids riding unpowered scooters weaving through traffic around by my secondary school back down south.

A mild hum would probably go a long way to making them safer, but also I suspect not making them illegal in public might actually help a bunch too - the folk using them are disproportionately those with no care for the rules, and there’s no education on appropriate use. If they were permitted, there’d be campaigns on safe use and people wouldn’t be nearly as problematic with them when there’s loads of others using them sensibly I bet. And, y’know, the hum could be introduced…

Yet another example of banning things not really working for the benefit of everyone compared to legalising and putting some standards against things.

Yeah they're probably the same lot, and Screwfix workers.

they ride on the pavement instead of the road where they're supposed to be.
Is there still a trial running in Stafford?

If not, then I understand that it not lawful to ride an e-scooter on the road, or a footpath.

I think they are an excellent cheap method for those that live some distance to get to work if cycling or walking isnt right for them. Thats said some form of sound on them, perhaps they all play yes sir I can boogie would really help me out, as I walk my dog around 6.15am and a fella comes past me every morning and even though I know he comes past me every morning, I notice him at the very last second. If Yes sir I can boogie was playing, problem solved. (Any other tune would be fine or a small beep every 5 seconds, but yes sir I can boogie would be my number 1 choice)

That's going be an earworm all night now. I'll be singing it to myself as I walk round checking the patients middle of the night!

I do agree with @littleme good choice of tune though.

Haven't been on that part of the chase since before covid, but then the segways were around, hired out from Go-Ape and mostly taken around the paths in controlled groups.

Maybe so, but they were zooming along at about 15MPH. Segways are two wheel gyroscope stabilised electric "scooters" and fundamentally unstable in the event of one of the wheels getting blocked, having to break suddenly. The area they were riding in was jam packed with people, a completely inappropriate location for it. A better location would be trails near the Army Cadets, near Wood Road car park, much quieter.

As for electric scooters, they're illegal in public spaces unless part of an authorised rental scheme. The Police don't seem to care, the times they used to pull us over for a bald tyre on a BMX (bald tyres aren't that dangerous on a bicycle) in the 1980s and now they won't deal with escooters that can easy kill people.

Saw a lad today sat on a thing......looked like a light up balance board, but had a middle post, then a footrest & stealing wheel type thing (handlebars) sat like he was on a go cart.....obviously electic
