Electric off-road skateboards over Cannock Chase.

Are they legal over there? saw two guys on them this morning, one was recording 360 footage.

Personally I think the last thing we need is loads of idiots racing around the chase on electric vehicles, they can be as fast as motorcycles.

Can either of you put your finger on this doll to tell me where the nasty e-skateboarders hurt you?

Bloody lethal things have no business what l being where walkers, animals or cyclists are.

They were more like these. Very pricey too, wouldn't surprise me if they're making content for a youtube channel or something.

Top Speed 22MPH!

Personally I think that anything that removes people from the form of transport most dangerous to people... the car... is a very good thing. If we are to get people away from motor vehicles and all the issues they present, pollution, congestion, reduction in our green and pleasant land with the constant need for more roads, the better.

I do think that there needs to be some behavioural expectations and laws around their usage, but its a backward person who thinks that banning them or making their use difficult will stop people wanting to use them. Much like skateboards back in the day, people want to use them so adapt the rules and educate on expected behaviour. Everyone then wins with the clean air and reduced traffic noise, congestion, etc

Yeah, but joy riding them over Cannock Chase is different to urban use. Skateboards like these would be particularly hazardous as if you have any slight incident (potholes are everywhere) the thing will go flying. Imagine one spinning into the path of cars, a car swerving to avoid and potentially hitting pedestrians.

Scooters are fine because you have handlebars you are holding.

Heaven forbid another method of transport negatively impacts the form of transport that most negatively impacts others!

Provide somewhere for people to legitimately have fun and ensure that those used in public adhere to documented rules. The existing inertia is from the dark ages. Used correctly electric scooters are a very green, quiet and efficient form of transport. Provide the rules and enforce them is all that is needed here. There is no criticism of electric scooters that couldn't be thrown at motorbikes yet we allow them when driven correctly. E scooters should be treated the same!

The nearest that I ever came to being properly injured by a mode of transport on the Chase was when I had to fling myself off a track and take cover behind a tree, to avoid being run down by three galloping horses (carrying highly amused riders).

I was not complaining about E scooters, I was complaining about electric skateboards, they are lethal in a urban environment, you simply are relying on gravity to keep yourself attached to them. They're too fast for pavements and too risky for roads which have drains, potholes etc..

Besides you are completely missing the point. I was complaining about them being used over Cannock Chase. A place where people go to walk their dogs, walk with their children and where there's also horses. They don't want to be mowed down by people recording action camera footage for their social media accounts.

That's not transportation, that's people doing extreme sports in an inappropriate area. By all means find somewhere for them to do it.

There have been walkers who have been hit by mountain bikers. I used to ride over there all the time and it annoyed me how some people see it as some sort of competition and set themselves speed targets. Then there's the emergence of gravel bikes (road bikes for off road) and the electric assisted mountain bikes which are fine if you're elderly or disabled, but they seem to be ridden by people who are using them like electric motorbikes.

Apologies, I must learn to read better!

Further issues to consider.

The Cops say:-

"PUBLIC SAFTEY - CANNOCK CHASE - We received a report yesterday (Saturday 4th) from a cyclist on Cannock Chase that a wire had been tied across a foot path around Brocton Coppice, Cannock Chase. The wire was tied between a tree and a post at adult waist height which could cause serious injury to walkers, cyclists, children, horse riders or wildlife. The Rangers have been informed and local officers are aware. Please be extra vigilant when using Cannock Chase and report any suspicious activity to Staffordshire Police on 101. Police ref 550 of 04/02/2023"

I used to ride my bike over the chase a lot but now I walk a lot due to having dogs and it does get a bit annoying how fast some people ride on shared use paths. There's dedicated trails for all the speed demons but they still like to zoom down hills while people are walking with dogs. So there's definitely people who take things into their own hands and put up wires or logs across trails (especially down trails on hills) to slow people down or knock them off. I don't condone it of course, it's the sort of thing people with a screw lose tend to do.

What has made things worse for walkers is the amount of people riding electric mountain bikes, so the average speed is much higher.

I read that there has been a few instances where wire has been tied across cycle paths and that one cyclist had gone over his crossbar.
A totally mindless action as what could be called adult waste height could be neck height for a child. Brainless idiots.
