Not sure if this thread will have legs but here goes 🙂.
I love sayings (and if known their origin) and wondered if other people did too and wanted to share.
one of my favourite that is largely misconstrued is....
It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey 🐒. Sometimes abbreviated to 'Brass monkey weather'
This is an old naval term as a brass monkey was a metal triangle used on Galleons (like one used to set the red balls for snooker) The Brass monkey was used to stack the cannon balls up in a pyramid formation and when the weather was really cold the salty sea water that had splashed on them would freeze and make the top ball fall off hence it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey 🙂

(Good idea for a thread by the way. But I have ordered in a couple of boxes of .50 calibre belts.) ...... ( and even more bacofoil.) :heyhey:

F*** it, if you can't laugh, even during the most awful tragedy, and I suspect like me a few on here have had that, then I paraphrase some good drama writing from Westworld: 'There's something wrong with this Universe..'

Pardon me for being philosophical, it's been a long and very peculiar day.

I remember a line from David Niven's book 'The Moon's a Balloon' (one of the funniest books I've ever read.)

"Looks like a bit of a f*** up at the far end." :heyhey:

Sea going sayings for people who have passed away:

For Sparkies: "He's gone silent key."
For Navigators: "He's crossed the bar."
For Engineers: "I told him not to go into the f****** crankcase !!"

The question 'Whose round is it ?" in a pub usually generates a lot of noisy discussion across the land. Except in Yorkshire, where it pushes the bar into a deathly silence !! 🤪

“Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in their shoes”

(that way you’ll be a mile down the road ahead of them - and you’ll have their shoes !)
