Film recommendations

I love watching films, usually I go for world cinema, independant or films based on real life events and am always looking for recommendations so if you have any please throw them in here!

I'll start with two that have made an impression this Christmas!

Parasite (on Prime) Wow! Just wow, deserves all the accolades it received. Amazing!

Hidden Figures (on dvd) Loved this, based on real events and a story I'd never heard of before. Such a good film the 2 hours passed super fast!

So what are yours?

We've watched some really good, and really shit! ones this year, mostly on Prime.

I would recommend; Pride, Late Night, Dark Waters and The Founder.

Thanks, will look out for those.

Another one I loved if social realism is your thing is 'Rocks' on Netflix

films based on real life events
I recently watched Searching for Sugar Man.

If it wasn't a true story, it would surely never have been made, as it's just way too far-fetched to be plausible as fiction...

Highly recommended from here.

Last night I watched Hillbilly Elegy on Netflix, was really good and based on a true story.

White Tiger on Netflix. Wow!

Ava DuVerney is involved so it was always going to be a top film! It was!

It's a sin, brilliant brilliant TV. All 4 for anyone fancies it. Follows a group of friends as AIDs ravages the gay community in the 80s.

I'm ready to watch it again and I only finished on Thursday. I constantly think about it.

Recently watched Waking Ned, easy going, light hearted nonsense.
Set in a small Irish village, good cast, likeable characters.

Thanks for so many good ideas for movies... we *watch full movies online on FMovies* (link removed) and we like this site. Have you tried it?
That's an interesting one. This has been edited to include a link that was not in the original message - presumably because it would have been removed immediately had the link appeared in the opening gambit. I mean it looked so obviously like spam, but where was the meat?

It's still likely to be a bot, though, isn't it? Which rather suggests that bots are now coded to return x hours later to include the intended links, but avoiding the dreaded banhammer, as the thread goes cold - all very interesting.

Oh, and 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' if you haven't already. I'd also say Jojo Rabbit, but i'm waiting for a legit source to see it myself first.

I enjoyed jojo rabbit way more than I expected, and certainly more than the synopsis indicates!

Oh god I adore Jojo Rabbit. Saw it three times at the cinema before the pandemic and have watched it three times again since. It's pretty much my go-to "pick me up" movie, now.

I also read the book it's based on last year, which was hilarious in how different in tone it is. From what I gather, Taika Waititi based his adaptation on a bad description of the book given to him by his mum rather than the book itself.

The banhammer seems to have fallen, now that you've highlighted the transgressor.

It may reduce the tolerance for spammy-looking posts in the future?

I've only seen one of the films featured in the Oscars: 'Promising Young Woman'
Pretty stunning ending .... took me by surprise.

The director, writer, and producer of that one is the future sister-in-law of the host of a podcast I listen to (got all that?!) so I've heard plenty about it this year, happy to see its success!

On a whim, I watched the Super Mario Bros movie again at the weekend as I saw it was on Prime. Must be the only other time I've seen it since it first came out.

It's..... not.... terrible? Not exactly a Super Mario story, for sure and the fact it's set in a dystopian world is bizarre for that franchise but, hey, I like dystopian fiction.

It's not GOOD by any stretch but it falls firmly into "enjoyably bad" for me.

I've noticed that each day there are a couple of films I think are worth watching on the 'Talking Pictures' channel, 81 I think, which is about the only channel worth having a television for.
I don't know why I don't mind watching films on TV but have never been one for going to the cinema but will drink beer in a pub though not at home.

I like all of these films ... but, Leon is out there ...

True Romance: Directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino with an amazing cast.
Leon: Directed and written by Luc Besson. Dark gripping thriller.
Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy: Good adaption of the book, compares well with the TV series.
Darkest Hour: How the hell did they make Gary Oldman look like Churchill ?

My favourite TV cop, Saga Norén played by Sofia Helin in the excellent Swedish TV series 'The Bridge.' As weird as a double ended corkscrew but compulsive viewing.
