Fire at St. George's

Just heard on Signal 1 news that there's been a "major" fire overnight at St. George's Hospital. The fire broke out in a central tower - cause not yet known. Around 40 firefighters were there.

Anyone know anything more? I've only written what they said on the radio, so feel free to correct if you know better!

How strange, was only walking through there on thursday and commented we were surprised more hadn't been done to destroy the horrible heap of outdated architecture. Can't build lovely new box flats with that in the way, and if you were forced to renovate it the rooms would be way to large for normal folk. Sure it may have looked good in its day, but I think we know what people really want.

From my vantage point of the golf course it looks like it's flared up again, we can see the flames

How do I edit this?
Someone sent Wormella a photo of it

I would love to see fields..

An open space in the middle of town

Common land for common people ;)
Are you mad? You could have 300 1 bed flats on there, easily. Keep the rooms below 9' per side and you'd get even more!

EDIT: Was hoping you meant the field was on fire, not the hospital :(

Still burning, it seems to be the right hand side of the main building where the smoke is coming from now (seen from the town side), and its pouring out as I drove down queens way, most of the roof is gone but that may have been al lready down from the last fire, have you noticed the water pressure is down on coton fields, they have two hoses running from a stand pipe on corporation st.

The Madness question is open to interpretation

Why on earth would I want to see 300 plus apartments for midgets in the middle of town, they cant even flog the ones by the river

We need a place for space, maybe a huge hill, so you can climb to the top and admire the views...Just like Arthur's Seat..

People of restricted height are of course entitled to homes as much as people without

I think Tek may have being sarcastic there or even factious,:D the open space in town is a good idea, a sort of Hyde park for Stafford, a bit off landscaping along side the stream, a footy pitch, some adventure play ground stuff for the kiddys in the day and the yobs at night. I'm sure WE could come up with a scheme that would have benefits for all given the amount off space available, sadly I can see another temporary car park in the future if its left to the local fuhrers.

back on topic, it's still burning, I can see the smoke rising again from my computer room window and it's getting thicker.

Yeah, just walked home from the GFs and can see it from the common, not good :(

And yes, was being sarcastic. We were actually commenting on Thurs on what a great looking place it could be, the grand staircase entrance could certainly help lend the place an air of superiority to anything else around. We all know that should the council decide to enforce its own rules it will become mainly flats, but they could be such a nice place if done properly. Especially if the land towards Queensway was used for parkland, they'd have a great view. Of course many will suspect this fire as being a deliberate attempt to destroy the building beyond repair to allow it to be demolished, but suspicion is all that can be at the current time.

I remember a listed building on BRC that had a protection order on it, but was taking up space that could be used for 3 story cardboard housing. One day it just dissapeared, some sort of freak planning accident where they somehow forgot they weren't allowed to destroy it I believe? Still, at least the fine they received destroyed any extra profits they could make from using the now vacant land.....

Surely nobody can believe that this fire is anything more than fortuitous?..

I understand the BRC-related fine was a whopping £200.

There was also an accidental attempt to remove that old tower in Church Lane, by the Market entrances - allegedly.

arf..

There was talk of unpaid security bills and then ruffians from oop north scavenging the site for anything of value to make up losses

Not sure who actually is in ownership of it now - I think Pritchard cut and run but stand to be corrected

George's Seat anyone?

Oh, and did Tesco ever get planning permission for the whitebox??

Can still see the smoke, from my back garden on Oxford gardens :o

It always makes me so very sad to see beautiful old buildings that have been allowed to fall into disrepair. And like tek my first thought was " ahh so if it burns down they can build what they want".
I cant find the bloody place but near to my old house in woolwich they renovated a dilpidated georgian hospital complex and each 1/2 bed flat goes for about 350,000 to 500,000....and people thought that was an eyesore and tried to rip it down burn it down etc... Just goes to show if a nice developer gets hold of something and they have the brains and balls it can be done
