In the days when I was around a bit more and spending a lot of time outdoors, I used to note the start of the 'firework season' in mid-September, running into early January, with few breaks, apart from a small lull in early December. It has faded somewhat from its peak around fifteen years ago.

In recent years, I have been a bit out-of-touch with it, spending the time mostly in a jurisdiction where the largest firework you can possess, buy, sell or use, without an explosives licence, is a party popper.

My cats get stressed too, we lost out beloved Tommy after he was scared by a *firework and ran across the road & infrint of a car, & that was about 2 weeks after bonfire night.

I'm a bit sensitive to loud bangs as a result of Alvin. The new dog Ginebra couldn't care less. I think Alvin is getting used to them, his recovery time is much better. But I know the shooting season is starting soon and that makes walks difficult. Starting with a new behaviourist in about 2 weeks time, hopefully she'll be able to help me get him moving. He really likes to be indoors, when out and about he'll try to walk into shops. Plus the one time I got him to go to Bod he froze as soon as he got outside. Ginebra is the opposite and was shaking when I took her into Just for Pets.

Just seen an advert on Facebook about the Hockey Club firework night. Wouldn't it be lovely, if they were the noiseless ones? There's no need for the bangs and whistles. My cats used be scared witless from now to New Year because of all the noise.

Personally I would regulate so they can only be used on the 5th November. Businesses have them on other days for commercial reasons. The meaning of the day has been lost. I was over in the USA in 1998 in June/July and they had fireworks on the 4th and that was it. Not fireworks month like we get.

Ban the sale of them across the counter permanently. Controlled and professionally run displays only (without unnecessary noises.)

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't get enough of them as a kid, but the things we got up to !! Breaking them down and making what in effect were pipe bombs. Let one off on the Rec once, an old metal bike pump body stuffed with extractions from rockets and bangers. It blew up with an enormous bang and nothing of the bike pump could be found. To this day I don't know how it is none of us picked up some shrapnel.

Selling high explosives over the counter doesn't make any sense.

I agree completely with you both. 1 night a year would still be too much for some people/pets though.

Sorry to be a killjoy. Ban them completely, or at the very least for sale only to organised displays which rain or shine can only be held on November the 5th. My dog goes through hell every year just for someone to have a little fun.

Another vote here for banning them. Having bonfires that release god knows what pollution in to the atmosphere as well as the noise pollution of the fireworks, let's stop all of it. And take Halloween and the doorstep begging with it!

On the next island to the west, the annual anti-firework campaign is about to start, where the cops will confiscate* any unlicensed fireworks, which is pretty much all of them - and remove the stockpiled material of any large bonfires, to avoid the bizarre craziness that goes on in Northern Ireland.

Fireworks and bonfires would be largely a Hallowe'en thing in the Republic, as burning Catholics is not generally seen as a good thing.

I think I heard one once, about ten years ago, but I'm not really sure if it was one, and I've definitely never seen one there.

The explosives that you are allowed to possess without a licence are -

Caps for toy guns.
Small sparklers.
Snaps for Christmas crackers.
Party poppers.

I remember when NYE was just party poppers and a few cheers as well. Then towards the end of the 1990s the obsession with having fireworks going off started too.
