Free Parking...

...or go direct to Jail without passing Go or collecting £200?

You may not know it but the County Council are launching a "Clear Streets Operation". While this sounds like a hell for leather US Army policy in Iraq, it is actually a county wide (including Stafford) scheme to ease up parking and congestion in town.

Here are the details, you have been warned! What do you think a good thing or bad thing??...

Clear Streets clear message - now online

This week sees the launch of Staffordshire's Clear Streets website - providing loads of information about the Clear Streets operation which will hit the streets this autumn in East Staffordshire, Moorlands, Stafford and Newcastle under Lyme.

Clear Streets has been put in place to keep the streets clear by cutting congestion, helping to reduce frustrations and dangers for local communities. The initiative also hopes to help create a better street environment for business, and to keep a path clear for the emergency services.

The first Clear Streets Officers will be out on patrol in East Staffordshire and Staffordshire Moorlands in just over a month's time. Stafford and Newcastle Boroughs come on board in November.

Those who illegally park will be fined under the Clear Streets Operation. If fines are paid within 14 days the penalty fee is £30, and £60 if you pay the fee within a month. Those who do not pay after one month will be charged for recovery cost which will see the penalty charge rise to £90.

All the charges are being ring fenced to pay for running the Clear Streets operation -any surplus will be spent on improving transport in the areas where the charges were raised.

Full details of the operations can be found at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/parking/

If you follow the links about residents parking schemes the site tells you that they will start considering applications in January, and that Stafford is not one of the areas from which they are considering applications. Super!

my mum started a petition for a residents parking scheme for around here before I moved into the area, and they said they were looking into it then. (20 years ago) Great!

cat_woman, you may have missed this thread - http://www.staffordforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=618 - about parking in Castletown, as it was active before you joined. I'd love to hear your views about this tricky subject.

According to the County Council's website, Stafford BC is doing residents' parking: http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/parking/residentparkingzone/newparkingschemes/residentparkingscheme.htm

I would have thought that Castletown has a pretty strong case for a residents' permit scheme.

Heads up folks.

The 'clear streets' campaign starts tomorrow. Which means there will be wardens on patrol (apparently!). So anyone living on Castletown be careful not to park on double yellows especially during the day.
Hopefully the commuters and students that persistently park seemingly anywhere they like on CT will be getting ticketed very soon and we will see the back of them for good and therefore the freeing up of some extra parking spaces for residents.

I've applied for a resident parking scheme on CT which will be considered in January. I'll keep you all posted.

Think of it this way. You drive home from work and can't park near your house. You drive to Sainsburys as its the only nearby place to park, and pay to park there, so that 2 hours later when all the commuters are home, you can go back to your car and bring it back to park outside your own house. Or do you park up on the yellows and leave it there til a space opens up outside your property? Why do you have to pay, because the people catching trains don't want to? If they made it a permit only area, where only residents got permits, the problems would pretty much go away.

So that is why Jerningham Street was rammed today...
Isn't it always? Usually by people parking on the pavement around the old post office, forcing pedestrians onto the road?

Ok, fair point I have sympathy if that is the situation for you, but double yellows are there for a reason so parking on them is not allowed (although why that reason doesn't apply to disabled badge holders I don't know, don't even get me started on that one!!!)

It seems like your problem would be solved by introducing resident only parking and I hope that they can do so for you!

I don't even drive, I just have sympathy for those who do. A girl I was seeing recently lived in castletown and I saw the problems she had parking.

The problem with a residents' parking scheme is you will undoubtedly have to pay for it, so either way you're being screwed. You either don't have anywhere to park your car, or you do and the council charge you stupid amounts of money for doing it.

As I shall no doubt soon be buying a small terraced house I can't wait for all the fun afforded by either option.

Don't mind coughing up £50 a year (proposed price) for a permit Jimbob. This is cheaper than two parking tickets!

The application for the Castletown parking sheme has been passed and will be reviewed in December and a decision will be made in the new year.

The clear streets wardens were out yesterday and putting a 'warning ticket' on any car parked on double yellows. They will start putting proper 'penalty tickets' on in two weeks.

They will also be able to ticket any car causing an obstruction i.e those blocking pavements or double parking parallel to double yellow lines and causing an obstruction e.g Jerningham St.

Not a bad price. Still a bit of a choker that you have to pay though. What will the money be used for? Not improvement of Castletown, that's for sure. Probably go towards some useless nobhead's pay rise.

Feeling bitter today.
