Get Windows 10 free

Well, I've done one machine and I haven't used the word 'improvement' to myself yet.

I thought it had buggered up my pictures good and proper - there is a prominent Pictures app, which just lists them in date order, as far as I can see, without any reference to the carefully arranged folders that I had before, no real use to me - after a moment of panic, I found that you can still get at them the 'old' way, so I've stuck in a desktop shortcut, to avoid multiple clicks - I just assumed that the app thing was a replacement for the simple clicking of Pictures in the Start menu as before - a heart-stopper.

Is Windows Defender a replacement for Microsoft Security Essentials?

Do I really have to click on a picture of a cave at the beginning? What's that for?

It seems to take a lot longer to start/restart than 7 did.

Yes your pictures are all stored as before it's just a new app to handle them. Similar with video's / music etc. If you preferred the old style "windows photo viewer" too then I have a registry key to enable that for you.

1. Yes indeed
2. Its just a new login type screen. You can change it to any picture you wish to use.
3. Unfortunately a lot of people are finding this that have upgraded. It's possibly due to old background programs trying to start that windows 10 doesn't use. A clean install is a better solution rather than an upgrade from 7.

I believe that the free update may end tomorrow.

I have persevered and am less offended than I was at the start - largely because I have found ways to "do it the old way".

Whoops - it might be July 29th......
It is indeed. I'm surprised that they aren't extending the offer though as I imagined that it would actually become a permanent free upgrade. It can make money from the sale of apps (just like Apple do) and the sooner they manage to shut down previous Windows versions the less work they have creating security patches and updates etc. I actually thought that was the whole point in making it free in the first place, although I could be mistaken.

Have just had the whole 'installing updates>configuring updates>failed to install updates>undoing changes>blank screen>installing updates>configuring updates...' for the past bloody HOUR!

... in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

In rare cases my arse.

If I upgrade a PC to 10, then go back to 7, can I then go back to 10 again when I trust it? Deadline is tomorrow, got a few machines that aren't done and TBH I'm not ready to migrate some of my servers anyway (yes, I run win 7 boxes as servers!).

Today I installed windows 10 onto a blank drive with an unused windows 7 pro key and it let me, so looks like you don't need the workaround above yet.

Got the anniversary update on a computer here, ran it via the media creation tool. Apart from the start menu, not a lot seems to have changed.
