Gigs at Bingley Hall.

Daily Mirror Pop awards winners were all invited to play at Bingley in the 70;s. Only saw Queen there,, can't remember what year (79/80 maybe). Queued outshide from 10 am, in an attempt to make the front row; mission accomplished, great performance, great experience. Loads of top performers at that time, but some very notable events. Showaddywaddy had a performance cancelled when they could only sell 750 tickets just prior to the gig! The Stranglers caused controversy in the early 80's when their stage routine included a female stripper who took off her top! :lorks: I was at Uni' at the time and one of my friends, a woman on the course, a very big stranglers fan, and ardent feminist struggled to justify the performance! :embarrass:.
20th St Bertellins Venture Scouts had the job of supervising the car parking, and their reward was to be allowed in after the support act were finished! :slayer: Never short of eager volunteers! :heyhey:

Good times; suppose, central location, excellent transport links, and what was the largest indoor arena without central roof supports/stanchions in the UK, at the time, helped its cause! Stafford was the centre of Rock & Pop for a few years. If memory serves me well 'Tillies' (Tillington Hall Hotel) was the place choice to spend the night for lots of bands. Groupies, autograph hunters, and just the curious camped outside (Yes him to! Ed ).Good times indeed! :bravo:

Talked with the venerable Mrs Seed, She had been to see Black Sabbath, Human League, Thin Lizzy & Police. can remember friends going to see Kiss and can certainly remember the disaster when concert goes turned up in Stafford at the wrong Bingley Hall.

I went to may gigs there - Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Frank Zappa are the some that come to mind.

As the crowd rushed stagewards at the ZZ Top gig, my mate's slip-on shoe came off - never to be seen again. Cant remember how he got home but we used to walk back to town afterwards.

Also at the Whitesnake gig many people who hadn't got tickets were being pushed through the ladies toilet window which was a small opening at about head height.

it was the lot off. maybe the first sighting of the lady part for me :D I still go to stranglers gigs, they play it without the ladies now :(

I used to get backstage passes for every band there from about 77? Eagles, up till zz top (late 80's?). I used to get the passes autographed and flog em at school when there, give em away to mates after I'd left. if only I'd kept em, they'd be worth a fortune, Freddie Mercury, Bowie, thin lizzys Phil Lynott, Bob Marley and many more I used to get friends into the gigs too. got chucked out at zz top cos I took a camera in and got between the crowd and stage bit without 'accreditation' had the film ripped out the camera. got back into the gig but kept out the way.
it was a great venue to have on your doorstep, coaches came from all over as it was the big central venue. acoustics and the place were a big let down, bingley either didn't care or didn't know what they actually had going.
the nec got built, everyone went there instead, bigger, better?, purpose built, and I had to start paying if I wanted to go.
despite all the free mega gigs at bingley hall I went to, and it was a hell of a lot, my heart and sounds were usually at vicki hall hanley.

...BIG BLOCK 'O' TEXT...
... that could do with some punctuation...

It is still a cow shed, so it still has that going for it...

*County Show this week*

... if you are more into watching cows in a shed than you are watching some of the best bands in the world.

Which of course many people aren't.

don't be a dick. there's punctuation there, just maybe not the right punctuation.
look up a few posts, similar size of '...BIG BLOCK 'O' TEXT...' if you want to be the grammar officer, point it out each and everytime.

the best bands in the world didn't choose the venue, it was promoters and management. it was the biggest central place available at the time. I can't remember which group called it for what it is, a cowshed, but it was part of bingley hall losing out, not that they seemed bothered.

there'll be many farmers there the next couple of days who will be more interested in Charolaise and Friesians than seeing any concert. each to their own, but if you want to knock them for their 2 day show a year, you do that. maybe Stoke could hold the show, would that suit you better?

I saw Queen and Fleetwood Mac in the 70s. Vividly remember when Mick Fleetwood started the set with simple hard bass drum into and my teenage chest physically felt it. Exciting! You bet.

King Freddie in his leotard singing We Are the Champions as the track had just been released and I had bought it from Lotus records in Mill Street. An enduring memory...

Sister saw Police and Bowie. Best mate had best one though as his family owned the catering company so guess who got in FREE!

Remember him telling me when Earth, Wind and Fire played they used to a trick when the singer disappeared from one part of stage and re appeared at another? How? All staff members of the venue where banned from the stage area during that song so they couldn't see how it was done..

It was almost like like having Rock and roll royalty performing at your local, we were so lucky. Through trudging back home after Fleetwood Mac to Oxford Gardens didn't feel that local....
