Global Day of Action for the Climate this Saturday!

Can you take part in the Global Day of Action for the Climate on Saturday (November 6)? It’s expected that millions of people around the world will be out in their towns and cities, calling on leaders at the COP26 summit in Glasgow to give our children and grandchildren the chance of a decent future.

There will be events in Stafford Market Square from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm

11.00 am static 'flashmob'
From 10.55-ish we all lurk nonchalantly around the Market Square area pretending to be thinking about the price of butter. Then, on a signal at 11.00 am, we raise our posters and banners, and eventually move to stand in a line (hopefully very long) to make it clear what is happening.

11.15-ish onwards. The static flashmob will effectively turn into a vigil, which people can join any time up to 1.00 pm (or even longer if they wish!)

Making posters and banners You are welcome to bring a poster, or fill in a message card during the vigil. Old bedsheets and marker pens will be available for children (and adults) to turn into banners to hang up on the spot. Bring your own materials if they are likely to be better!

I'm gobsmacked. Why is this site not flooded with discussion about the biggest threat to life on earth since the last ice age? The COP26 summit has one week left. Then that's it.

There has been quite a bit of discussion of climate matters, going back many years - have you missed them?

I also doubt that the delegates at COP26 are perusing the Forum that much.

Perhaps I did not explain myself clearly enough. I was thinking of NOW, these two weeks of the COP26 summit, which even people like Boris Johnson describe as the world's last chance saloon. I was asking why we on this forum (and indeed everyone everywhere in the whole world) are not talking all the time about something so all-embracing - the end of life on this planet as we know it. It's not just a matter for world leaders in Glasgow (indeed, Greta Thunberg has today described the conference as a green whitewash) but for all of us in our daily lives. There are perhaps four main dimensions for us all to talk about:

What we need to know and understand about the situation eg the science of global warming, the loss of biodiversity, pollution ...
What ethical code we should have about it eg whether we should care for all future generations as well as we do for our own, whether we should care for other life forms as well as our own ....
What changes in our lifestyle we should be making eg less meat. less travel (especially by car and plane), less consumption of throwaway products, more use of renewables ...
What we should be doing to help and encourage others to change as well (from our leaders to the person next door) - from participation in tomorrow's global day of action for the climate to discussing it all on this forum in the great depth which is needed ....
