Does anyone know if there is still a public footpath or right of way from North Avenue to Parkside ?

It can be done - I used a good part of that route to get from Bellasis Street to the end of Bradshaw Way in December two years ago - to get to an 'event' at the Bull.

However, it would be good training for trying to escape from North Korea...

OK, the historical documentation suggests that I started from Common Road, so I didn't use the first part from the end of North Avenue, but that is probably the easiest part. The route there was the red line - I elected for a 'short cut' on the way back, the lilac route - but that was interrupted by a small lake and turned out to be a bit longer, both physically and in the time taken. It would all probably have been lot easier in daylight, though.

Also, I would suggest not Googling 'bottom park'.

If you want the bit of Parkside near the Stone Road it would be cleaner to walk up the Stone Road. If you want the bit near the common then from the bottom of North Avenue go through the little pedestrian access head left along the Balfour perimeter fence and go right ish around the houses, the way on to Parkside is quiet easy to see but beware of the boggy ground all around that area. The cleaner route from the bottom of North avenue is up to the pink route on the map and head up hill towards Parkside.

There use to be car access to Balfour school from North Avenue that ran behind Taplin Close as well as a gate from Balfour onto Parkside by Ashdale Drive are they still there?
