Graphics card power problem

My computer has popped up with a box saying that the nVidia graphics card is suffering from a lack of power, which could be detrimental to blah blah blah. I've not changed a thing, and have never seen this before. Can anyone help??? It's quite worrying

It's an nVidia GeForce FX 5900XT. How do i find out the PSU wattage, and what other components would you need to know about?

i've never heard of such an error message, are you sure it's a genuine windows error and not a cleverly disguised pop-up? it sounds like one of those "Your computer is unstable due to a lack of resources. Click here to download Super Happy Cleener Ultra++ Edition v3.0 to remedy the problem" blags..

your gfx card is pretty old school, so i assume it's AGP, which means it doesn't require a direct power source like newer PCIe cards.. even if it did, i don't think windows would report an absence of this power - your system just wouldn't boot, or would be very unstable..

defo sounds like a blag, bra..

If you are uncomfortable doing this i don't mind doing it for you and if I'm teaching you to suck eggs I apologise

All this should be done with the PC shut down , turned off at the plug but with the plug left in (earthed)

Your card should/will have a 4-pin molex power connector connected to it,
make sure that is connected properly.

When was the last time you cleaned your case out?
Dust build-up can hamper connections, just a clean out and reconnection can help.

if you can, use an independant molex connector from your PSU attached to your card not a 'daisy chained' connection.
independant connection will not share the available power on a rail where a daisy chaining would.

Even if it was a blag, i suppose it'd be a good idea to clean it out anyway. Luckily i know a few people who tinker with PCs, but thanks very much for the offer!

You pair posted twice in the time it took me to reply, lol

I agree

Run ad-aware/spyware check and clear the dirty devils of the internet off your system and see if it still occurs

It certainly seems to have done the trick, yeah. I've not had any similar messages since re-installing, but then i've also been treating the PC with kid gloves....don't want it packing in completely. Cheers Sofa.
