Halloween 2016

Very quiet up here so far - although I know the recent clown-thing has probably caused many families with younger children not to go out this year trick-or-treating.

This is my first attempt at a hallowindow which has certainly drawn attention from passing cars if nothing else :)

Now it's attracting more door knocks than any other year ever. Back to the shop I go! lol

Generally these days the kids have wised up to only knocking on houses with some kind of halloween decoration in order to save wasted time and therefore get more treats. This of course also saves the agro for those in houses not wanting to take part - so it's kind of a win-win.

Halloween is more of a 'thing' in Ireland, the whole "burning Catholics" event next weekend is not really celebrated.

Halloween has been reimported back from the US in recent years, sometimes with updates from recent popular culture.....

When on my way to Sainsbury’s earlier I counted about half a dozen groups working the main Doxey rd, one group was pushing a shopping trolley which I thought was a bit ambitious. We don’t get trick or treater’s out here very often, the last was about ten years ago and they arrived on bonfire night. They had apparently spent three days trying to get out of Ranton.:mystery:

Love that!!
I love Halloween. This is the first year my eldest decided not to join us... Gutted! What will I do when they've all grown out of trick or treating? I'm not sure it's socially acceptable to go out trick or treating without any kids in tow?
We don't get many visitors, so now I not only have the younger twos haul to dig into but also the unclaimed chocolate bars I left out for callers!

I hate Halloween for the sake of the kids it's the night all the perverts stay in and wait for the knock at the door, there isn't any other night people would let their child go knocking on a strangers door!

I long for the days where English traditions like penny for the guy dominated, and carol singers, what happened to kids that did these? I mean, I know they grew up, but why did the tradition stop :(

Like a lot of things, I blame it all on mobile phones. They've completely changed how kids are today and put an end to many MANY traditions. A couple of months ago I actually witnessed some kids playing kerbie and felt like I'd just driven down a street in the 80's.

Mobile phones or parents who buy them?

Halloween has always been a thing here it's just enjoying a resurgence right now.
The thing with Penny for the Guy is that back then you could do more with a penny. These days for there to be any point you'd have to ask for a fair bit more and that's where you come unstuck, knocking on a door that looks like it's happy to participate, ie, it has Halloween decorations up in the hope of a sweet is one thing. Knocking on random doors asking for money is quite another.
I'm happy to hand over a few pence worth of sweets but i'm not giving money out, I just don't have it for a start.
As for carol singers I've no idea but possibly the same reason, few people want them, much more likely to get told to go away for little or no return and these days it's usually wet and horrible around that time of year instead of just dry but cold. If we had some round here I'd possibly give them a chocolate or something my OH is far less charitable lol.

You are absolutely right, but as with most things there is a huge pressure on parents due to peer pressure. We have 7 kids between us, 5 still under the roof. When literally everyone that they know owns a mobile phone it comes to a point where you feel almost gulty saying no - it becomes almost a punishment that they don't deserve. Ours all also wanted them out of their Christmas budgets in the past, and we don't frequently pay for credit - usually they have none at all. However they can communicate for free via Facebook / Snapchat / Facetime etc via wifi connection, and ring and text for free if their mates also have Giffgaff sims.

It's just changing times. I would personally rather our kids have the same childhood that we all had, but short of dragging them off to the wilderness permanently there's not much choice but to keep up.

Those days are long gone sadly, there is a terrible culture of keeping up with the jones' s and so much peer pressure to do so!

I heard somewhere today

The poor spend everything soon as they get paid
The middle class spend on things trying to look upper class
The upper class buy assets.

They should educate them in schools on this.
