High-speed rail plans announced by government.

Another vague thought on railways

Where does the branch line go that you can see from the new apartments opposite the railway pub?

I am guessing it was either used for the Caslte works or Universal, or perhaps a St Trinians film set

HS2 will also be costlier to build than foreign high-speed lines. But why?

HS2Ltd, the government company behind the HS2 blueprint, blames Britain's complex "contractual relationships"; erratic rail investment causing skills shortages and a perceived need for "additional supervision"; "multiple layers of technical and commercial supervision...each commercial layer adding overheads and profit"; and not forgetting "overhead technical, safety and commercial checking and acceptance roles considered necessary in the UK environment which are not considered necessary elsewhere".

How did the government respond to this indictment of excessive complication? It commissioned more consultants to "work with the Department for Transport to consider whether and how civil-engineering costs can be reduced"!

I noticed a new 'accident management' company in town, getting in before the rest? Too many debts? Then fall over a kerb!

The Shropshire Union Railway
The Shrewsbury and Wellington section is still in use today by Arriva Trains Wales.
Passenger services on the Stafford to Wellington section ended on 7 September 1964. Goods services ceased between Stafford and Newport on 1 August 1966 and this branch from Wellington was cut back to Donnington on 22 November 1969.

The line was then Sidings to the Universal works

I have vague memories of a white house - now gone - that used to be beside the railway near Baswich towards Milford...
No need to be vague, that was the White House - nearer the canal than the railway,
parts remain - not in my memory but in the memories of many i know. I can quiz (ego) them if you'd like?

This particular house ( memory unreliable ) actually faced the railway a gobs spit from it

These are memories from a childhood spent in three continents so it could be torralborrux

It's definitely the same house.
(dropped at slip) I'm absolutely sure there are folk on here who remember playing in this house - one of the reasons they played there is sure to be because they'd been told not to.

Was down there only yesterday. A little brickwork remains.
The lane is now a footpath down to the Canal.

I suppose bluebell wood is now a housing estate, the Kingfishers and crayfish have up and left and the sewage works no longer has a million rubber johnnies but all the pish has turned female?

And please dont say the saltworks have gone down to a three day week

Unfortunately the high speed bit won't start until you have arrived by another 'normal' train into Birmingham...

London is now 1hour 20 minutes from Stafford. Highly unlikely that this time will ever be beaten, ever, ever ... :/
