History of the Showground.

We were having a discussion at breakfast about the history of the County Showground and then we were surprised to find the only information on its history we could find was about bands that had played at Bingley Hall in its heyday.

Does anyone here know what was there before the showground?

We used to play rugby, when I was at school, in the field that is now the overflow car park over the road from the showground.

Other than that useless fact I don't know the history of the showground.

Does that look like pub called The Lamb at the top of Weston Bank ?
I think that is between the showground and the crossroads at Within Lane not the top of Weston Bank but I may be wrong.

It may now be the farmhouse behind the trees.

In fact. There's signs of something possibly being there once on the aerial photo. Either that or a rather odd shaped tarmac job.

I've tried to match up the map with Google maps (the old map's road wasn't very accurate it seems) and it looks like The Lamb was pretty much opposite the entrance to the showground.

The A518 was straightened a few years back after a particularly nasty accident on it. Therefore the original map was probably pretty accurate

It looks to me like it is where Pool Cottage is.

First I've heard of it being a pub in the past, though. It was/is owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury's estate.

If @Tommo is still around, he may know something?

Yes straightened, and that means everyone driving faster and so even nastier accidents such as between the motorway bridge and Haughton.
