My daughter is a hoarder – she says the things she keeps are her memories – she gets very distressed it we attempt to motivate her to throw anything away – I've come to the decision that her bedroom is her space and if she hoards in there then it's her room and she can do what she wants with it. When it starts to extend to the rest of the house I do tell her that it has to stop. I have to be firm and explain that we will have no space to sit, eat and live if she extends her hoarding to the rest of the house. I've read everything I can about the subject and how you deal with it as a family is a personal and individual matter. Cognitive behavioural therapy is recommended as treatment – but understanding a lots of patience is the key for the family

My Mum was a hoarder, she got physically distressed if we tried to get rid of anything. My brother was very good at focusing on one specific area, say one pile of sh*te , and ask her to just deal with that little bit. Seemed to work quite well but it was very time consuming. When she died it took months and mnay many trips to the charity with vans full to get rid of it all. It's no surprise to that me and all my siblings can't stand clutter!!!
