Horse meat

Someone told me today they believe the sale of horse meat is illegal in this country, but I though the opposite was the case. I had always understood nags would be sent to the knackers yard to be made into cat food, or is that a fallacy?

What's the truth?

It is largely a cultural matter. It has been widely consumed during periods of general shortages, during the world wars and I believe there was period in the 50s when there was a resurgence of consumption. It was always regarding as a 'last resort', possibly even a step below whale meat.

A minor character in an episode of Round the Horne was described as 'an entrepreneur in reconditioned horse-meat' - assignations often took place 'above the horse-meat shop' and, on one memorable occasion 'in the doorway-'...

I've just called in on John Anslow for the definitive situation, and he says that it is available, should you require some, but, despite selling almost everything this side of panda for a good few years now, he has never once been asked for horse-meat..

Telephone 258067 - I've just put my bike away - I'll try to remember to ask when I'm next passing..

I would imagine that he does, there's ostrich and kangaroo available on a daily basis now.

Top butcher, traditional shop and great meat and other goodies. Always a queue out of the door on a Saturday morning.

I have never eaten a meat kebab. I always thought they were made from the Kebab animal, a beast with no head, arms, legs, internal organs or veins. Is that not the case?

According to some sources, the wild haggis's left legs are of different length than its right legs (cf. Sidehill gouger), allowing it to run quickly around the steep mountains and hillsides which make up its natural habitat, but only in one direction
:D

In the back of my mind I feel that Michael Bentine may have been the original source of this 'information'..

A thread that interests in, after my self obsessed ramblings, but unfortunately horse meat holds no attraction for me; mind you speaking as a veggie', can't see how people can get all outraged and pernickety about which mamal/living sentient being they have chosen the kill and devoure! If it tastes good, and you are happy to, eat the fecker'.; don't get sentimental and anthropomorphic abot it!

I quite like reindeer, does he sell that?
Mr Anslow has sold reindeer in the past, but it wasn't a good seller and he doesn't stock it regularly these days. He does recommend that you try his kudu or springbok, if reindeer's the sort of thing you like..
