How do you rate you ISP?

Just finished a 7 day battle with my exchange server only to find that it was in fact a BT issue. They have to be the most useless and unhelpful ISP ever :(

i'm with ntl/virgin, and am one of the lucky ones.. i have had nothing but good service (i.e. internet service, not customer service) in all the years i've used them, and wouldn't dream of going back to adsl unless i was forced..

i regularly get 1.1MB/s download in µtorrent, it's the absolute tits.. the only downside i have experienced is their annoying "download more than a few gig in peak time and we throttle you for 4 hours," but even that can be managed pretty easily

I am with them at home too, on the 10Meg service. Absolutely nothing short of brilliant, like you I can get 1.1 MB/s on torrent and also ftp. The upload rate is fantastic too.

Not had one positive experience on DSL either, its a waste of time and money. Just hope Virgin don't get too many more customers now ;)

Here you go - the reason why cable is better. Bobby will have seen this lots before, I'm sure!

Must admit, where reliability is concerned I always recommend Virgin Media to my customers too.
ADSL sucks!!! Nothing but trouble.

We recently had a rough few weeks connection on our virgin service, which at first they said was the cable as we are the furthest away from the box on our street, but later they replaced the box as everyone down here had poor connections. Since then its been sorted.

Thats the only issue I've ever had with Virgin. Their customewr service was APPAULING for me, spent 30 minutes regularly being passed from department to department till I was threatening to go elsewhere, but anyone wondering where to go for broadband DONT LET THIS PUT YOU OFF! It was a big one off problem, and in general they are without a doubt the best.

CABLE was designed to handle large amounts of data. Phone lines were designed to be... well... PHONE lines. The slightest glitch on your phone line and your broadband gets dropped. Pain in the arse! Also, if you're a long distance from the telephone exchange you'll NEVER get the 8 meg service they charge you for.

Absolutely! My parents against my advice went for a BT home hub setup and they live close to the exchange and have had new cabling in the last few years. Not once seen it go higher than 3 - 3.5 Mbps. Thats a maz download rate of around 450 k/s - if you're really really lucky.

I too am with Virgin and on internet is great, CS sucks...

BTW Bobby, how do you "manage" their throttling? PM if its top secret.

I'm glad you've all had good experiences with Virgin. Personally, I've had nothing but crap off them, right from installation. Constant service outtages, a throttled connection even outside of the supposed 'peak time' slot, rude and unhelpful call centre staff, incorrect bills - the list is endless.

That said, who else is there? I hear worse tales from BT customers, and you have to have that BT line for any other service. So I'll end up staying with Virgin, but through gritted teeth.

Leave you PC on and download between 1200 (midnight) and 1600 hours on the weekdays, and between 1200 (midnight) and 1000 on weekends ;)

sorry, i managed to miss this post yesterday.. but yeah, what shoes said, basically.. no underhand tricks or anything - i just leave my main PC on 24hrs a day, and have µtorrent set to seed permanently, but i only download 18:00 - 07:00.. that way, i never exceed the download limit during peak hours, which means my speed is never throttled

i think the cap kicks in if you download more than about 4GB during peak hours, so by scheduling µtorrent to not download in this time, i am more than covered for "normal" downloading during this slot..

virgin's internet service is quality.. i consistently get 1.1MB/s in µtorrent, it's the absolute tits.. i am fully aware that their customer service is gay as a window, but they are definitely one of those companies who, if you are lucky enough to never have any problems, they are the don

I agree, I can regularly sustain 1.1 MB/s on uTorrent, and also from some ftp/http downloads too. It really is the mutt's nuts! It is a little more (this is my last month of £17 - next it will be £24 but still reasonable for the speed of the service you get).

Edit: See post #8
