So far so good, I really am struggling to find a problem with the phone. The HUKD thread is 2800 posts long and I can't remember any niggles that weren't fixed or just people being fools.

I have bluetooth in the car but not got round to pairing it up yet, will do at the weekend and let you know how it goes... my Hero paired without any problems though so can't see there would be a problem.

I think all of the networks have had problems finding stock on the Desire, lengthy threads on MSE and HUKD have shown that.

I did read the other day that the Desire (and Nexus One) has an FM transmitter on board and also Wi-Fi N but they have not yet been unleashed in the firmware updates... will be interesting to see if that's true.

What's the Desire like for transferring music and videos? I quite like iTunes for doing that on my iPhone, cos it's easy....is there anything similar?

Probably gonna swallow my pride and swap my iPhone for one fairly soon...

i use itunes to organise/play my music, because it's actually pretty good on the mac.. i don't have an ipod, i have a sony mp3 player, and i just drag 'n' drop folders from the itunes folder onto my sony, it's a piece of cake! itunes keeps everything organised in a sensible, hierarchical format, and hardcodes album artwork into the mp3 files, so everything stays dead neat on my sony and all the artwork shows up, etc..

i would imagine the desire is similar.. would like to hear gk's (or anyone else's) results, though :)

Never used iTunes mate so not sure but I have heard people say its a PITA to use.

With the Desire (and all Android phones) there is a few ways you can do it:

1. Drag and drop to a memory card and put that in the phone
2. Drag and drop to the phone (memory card) whilst connected via the USB cable (mounted as a flash drive)
3. Use something like Wi-Fi File Explorer to transfer stuff wirelessley

I think it was on here someone was complaining a while back that they didn't like having to mount the phone to transfer stuff... I find it very easy though, its just like plugging in a USB flash drive excepting you have to "mount" the phone once plugged in... basically as easy as pressing one button, takes a second if that.

it's a bit shit on the PC imo (non-standard interface, sometimes counter-intuitive, constant updates from apple which try to trick you into installing other crap, etc.) but i love it on the mac.. and as mentioned above, it keeps everything organised so means dragging and dropping files is a doddle!

nice, i like options.. wifi sounds good! i would hope bluetooth is in there too, given that the desire apparently supports all manner of BT profiles (see my earlier post regarding bluetooth)..

i just had a text from a mate; i might be getting one tomorrow

yeah that was me.. it's a minor niggle, i just thought it was a bit unecessary and might confuse non-computer types who don't know what "mount" means! i was commenting on it specifically in relation to comparing ease-of-use of android devices compared to the iphone for non-techy types.. like you say, it's a single step that really doesn't get in the way of day-to-day usability!

I'm sure bluetooth is an option too but I would think it would be slow for multiple albums at once?!?! Never tried it though.

Yes Wi-Fi File Explorer is ace for getting things on and off the phone.

If you get one, I hope you like it after i've bigged it up on here so much matey.

What phone are you using now?

I actually quite like iTunes on my PC, although that might be because I've never used it on a Mac! It's not great, but it syncs my phone with my music collection and playlists effortlessly and I like that because I am lazy.

Doing it all via wifi appeals to the geek in me - it's one of the many things that I can't do with my iPhone that I should be able to do!

The HTC Desire is out next week on o2, so chances are I'll be getting one soon :)

oh i'm sure i will! tbh i was going to get one anyway, your experience has just reinforced my decision.. i love the gf's hero, so i'm bound to like the desire..

a nokia n95, it's a massive piece of shit.. frankly, a nokia 3210 could be considered an upgrade lol..

innit, i know itunes comes in for a lot of stick but i love it.. it's exactly the same on the PC (functionally) as the mac version, which is why i think it comes in for some stick from PC users - it doesn't conform to windows GUI standards (which it should, certainly to a degree, imo) so seems counter-intuitive to a lot of people.. that, plus the endless update nags & attempts to install safari, etc..

but yeah, as a media organiser i love it..

Ah, now my mind is at ease.... I know you'll love it then.

I thought you didn't like the Hero, must have just been your early experiences.

no, i do like the hero, my initial complaints were just that it wasn't as easy to use or immediately obvious as the iphone.. i still think the iphone wins in that respect - the app store is great, and the fact you can browse it in itunes makes it so easy to use - but thankfully i'm a geek so have no problem delving a little deeper in order to exploit android's obvious benefits :)

That's my main reason why I won't be waiting for the new iPhone - everything is just far too simple and limiting. The phone is capable of so much more, but apple restrict you from doing anything it can't make money from.

True furbal... they only reason they allowed (yes thats "they ALLOWED") multi tasking on the new iPhone OS (IMHO) was so that they could have ads within apps and you can click the add and view a web page without losing your game etc.

no, i got one! i got the shit out of one! :xd:

BTW have now paired my phone with in-car bluetooth and works like a dream.
i'm still waiting for my number to port over (eta: today) so i haven't actually been using it as a phone yet, so haven't got round to pairing it with my car.. i'm not expecting any trouble, though :D

i absolutely love it.. it's so much smoother and quicker to use than the gf's hero.. the barcode scanner seems to work better as well.. cannot recommend one enough to people!

While the Nexus One running 2.1 had a Linpack score of 6.5-7MFLOPS, a Nexus running the latest [2.2] version of Android scored 37.5 MFLOPS.
i'm sorry, what? for a moment there i thought you said a 5-fold increase in speed...

really? i didn't know this.. i'm forever lamenting the fact i can't text* while driving so this would be a godsend! how does one dictate a text message on the Desire?

edit: this thread seems to suggest voice-to-text has been crippled on the desire :strange:

* (and when i say "lamenting the fact i can't text" i obviously mean "texting awkwardly")

On the pop up keyboard, do you have a microphone icon to the left of the space bar?

EDIT: Just read that forum, I'm on tmobile so its not that. I'm also on a Milestone, so its not just for the nexus. Try installing Google Translate as that has all the needed binaries, may kick it to life perhaps?
