Wind turbines are ugly and uneconomical!

They are subsidised by the government so they can reach some half-arsed 'green' target!
Aren't you just the perfect little ray of sunshine a?
Perhaps you'd prefer more power stations to be built?
If I had the land I'd have 1, there's a couple near my little sister on the other side of Eccleshall.

Finding out the cost effectiveness of wind power or an individual windmill or tilt of windmills is near on impossible. ( turbines not mills, 'appen )

Ruddy green targets, ruddy subsidies, ruddy European directives, ruddy cheeks upont that hill

How many MP's and former MP''s have an "interest" in these things?

We must be told!

thing with wind turbines the amount of energy they produce isn't constant. when the wind stops blowing there is no electric produced. going to be controversial here and say at present nuclear will likely need to play a bigger part in meeting energy demand /security in the medium to long term. but i am hopeful that one day the problems with hydrogen can be ironed out to give cheap limitless supply of clean energy

Some discussion of this sort of thing here - http://www.staffordforum.com/xf/index.php?threads/nuclear-power-safe-or-not.6316/ .

A lot of countries including the likes of Germany are building more coal fired power stations.

Nuclear power is probably the way they will go but it scares the hell out of me!

Nuclear power in private hands seems more than a bit barmy to me - even if the 'private' hands are those of a foreign government's nationalised energy provider, funded by a 'communist' state.

Wind power is part of the equation, but we need controllable generation. At the moment the national grid isn't geared up for renewables.

When demand grows you need to be able to bring generation online, when demand falls you need to cut down generation. With wind turbines you have to disconnect them from the grid, those running wind farms still get paid even when the turbines are disconnected, this is ludicrous.

Flossietoo & I discussed this very thing on our recent cycle excursion - passing, as we did, at least one 'down with this sort of thing' area. We were very much in favour.

Personally i would favour them even more if they were all called Hugh, though i wouldn't care to speak for Flossietoo on this front.

I concur. They should all be called Hugh. Even the lady ones.

Onshore wind is now the cheapest form of new electricity generation in Denmark, undercutting coal power, according to the government’s energy agency.

New analysis shows that onshore wind plants due online in 2016 will cost half the price of coal and natural gas plants, coming in at around 4 cent euro (3 UK pence) per kilowatt hour.

Rasmus Petersen (real name) Danish Minister for Energy, Climate and Buildings said:

Wind power today is cheaper than other forms of energy, not least because of a big commitment and professionalism in the field. This is true both for researchers, companies and politicians. We need a long-term and stable energy policy to ensure that renewable energy, both today and in the future is the obvious choice.

An early adopter of wind energy, Denmark has set a string of renewable records, with wind meeting over half of the country’s power demand last December.

The new figures highlight a growing trend across Europe, where clean energy is increasingly becoming cost competitive.

Earlier this year, a report from consulting firm ECLAREON found that solar power had reached grid parity in Italy, Spain and Germany – where renewable energy records have also been broken in recent weeks.

Analysts believe the trend is set to continue, saying that, globally, grid parity for renewables will become “a reality in coming years”.

Countries strong on renewables are also winning the global energy efficiency race.

New research last week ranked Germany as the most energy efficient major economy; with Italy coming in second, and the EU as a whole in third. France also ranked highly, taking the joint fourth place spot with China, while Britain and Japan tied in sixth.

It's NOT a wind turbine but a big fan to keep all the Baswich residents cool this summer.

How do I edit this?
Compared with most of the rest of the country Staffordshire is distinctly lacking in them. Mainly down to the "it will spoil the view from my windows" crowd. You don't want turbines or pylons near you then you should have the electricity supply to your house cut off.

My (retired generating engineer) father once propounded after a glass of wine that when nimbyish types objected to wind farms it should be considered an automatic agreement to a coal power station in the same spot.....

Personally I rather like the wind farms. I remember thinking on a drive down to Cornwall a few years back that they were as much a part of the working landscape as the tin mines.

If they still argue, make it nuclear.
