Any forumite's a bit handy when it comes to ipods or itunes??

When i downloaded itunes 7 as instructed my ipod decided to wipe itself instantly after the first update

I reset the ipod to factory settings and reinstalled itunes and reupdated the ipod. Now half the songs i have on itunes won't transfer to my ipod and they all have an exclamation mark next to them, if you click on them its says the file can't be located. Grrrr

Have looked on the web but tbh any information on there doesn't relate and the is just a mass of technical information on these things that hardly makes sense.

Any ipodeas?

Do you still have all the music files on your computer or has it deleted the actual files? I think I had the same problem with mine, but I was able to go through the wonderful process of locating all the files and putting them back on (and then deleting about 4000 duplicates). Mine, however, has now completely given up, all the music fell out, and whenever I try to put music back on it says the file is corrupt and my brain explodes. Conveniently just after the warrenty expired. I looked on t'interweb and happarantly Apple have got their fingers in their ears with their eyes squeezed shut with regards to pretty much most of the errors. Charming.

i'm interested to hear people's ipod stories as well.. my missus just won one of those Bose iPod SoundDock thingies (worth £250!) but she hasn't actually got an ipod to dock in it (she just spends all day at work entering competitions, regardless of what they're for, bless her)..

so, i reckon i'm gonna get her one of those cute looking nano efforts for xmas.. i know absolutely nothing about ipods, but i'm starting to think apple pulled their usual trick of making things unnecessarily awkward by tying you to proprietary hardware/software.. steve jobs - suck my balls :grr:

do you have to use itunes with the ipod? it's a big pile of wank, and frankly i'd sooner entrust my data to microsoft than that brushed aluminium piece of malware.. can i just download regular mp3s (off torrent sites, dodgy p2p, etc.) and transfer them to the ipod? and presumably i can rip CDs straight to the ipod - can this be done without itunes?

I have a feeling that it's not possible to use any other music player, though I have heard of people writing scripts and patches in order to improve and customise itunes to make it a little less painful to use. After I got used to itunes I found that it wasn't too bad, except when it loves up and then I have to go and have a cold shower to stop myself throwing my ipod at the computer.

I have one of those little caddy thingies though I don't think it was one of the very expensive ones - just a little thing. If you do have an ipod I think they're well worth it, really handy at houseparties and suchlike.

i pods are shit.
Thanks Miss T this is really helpful!

Yeah ipods are brilliant when they work as mine has done perfectly for 6 months. Just like a big jukebox of all your favourite music without the clutter of cd's. It was only with the release of itunes 7 that i started having an issue.

Dirty, you can rip cd's onto it no probs and you can put what tunes you like on there after you have downloaded it. It's only in itunes where you have to download direct from them.

Noir, I have still got all my itunes backed up. I feared that a terrble laborious process was involved in getting the tunes back on and sympathise for what you must have gone through. I remember deleting all my duplicate songs and this was a soul destroying task. I may just delete my whole itunes library and start again!

I think this is what I ended up doing the last time it did it. It's probably the better of the options. Still an arse though. Good luck with it  If we don't see you on here for a while we can assume the worst.

Thats what i'll do then. Cheers for the advice Noir

Aren't i-pods set to wipe all their contents each time you plug them into a computer unless you tell them otherwise? Anders Panders' was anyway. Not necessarily directly linked to this thread, but further proof if it were needed that Apple Mac products are shit. I bought into all the bullshit I was fed at 'art' college about how great they were and even bought an i-mac a few years back. More fool me. All style and no content, and drastically overpriced to boot. A great example of a company who believe their own hype a bit too much.

Sling it out the window and buy a Creative player instead. Much better/cheaper/easier to use.

I'm sorry Jimbob, but Apple hardware and software is far more superior than Bill Gates shower of shite. I've used Macs for about 10 years and recently bought a PC laptop and can't believe what a wanky operating system Windows is. I can't believe the majority of the world put up with it. I agree about Ipod's dodgy compatibility issues though.

whilst slightly off topic i feel i need to fight the corner for pcs a little bit, even if you do have to use MS operating systems. miss upsetter got an ibook about the same time i got my pc laptop about 3 years ago, and hers was virtually unusable after 2 years and a few updates, whereas mine is slowing down but still going strong. i have to concur with jimbob on this one, as apple basically need users to upgrade their computers every two years to make their money, so every new product/update they release means that your 'older' (ie more than a year) macs become obslete far quicker than pcs do.
so there.

Well my Imac and G4 are still going strong despite being hammered daily for over five years... My major issue with Windows is the process used to navigate the system, it's so laborious. I can't believe that with all of Bill Gates dosh he can't come up with something better.

As I currently spend about 18 hours a day in front of a computer and have done for about 15 years I think I am qualified enough to say that you are too hairy.

yes! the forum's first PC vs. Mac debate :slayer:

PCs are better.. tenshon, you're not objectively comparing statistics and ergonomics - you are simply used to the way Mac OS operates and thus have trouble finding the fundamentals of Windows intuitive.. i'm a massive geek, spend my whole working life in front of a computer and when i come home sit in front of one.. i owned both a PC and a G4 Mac for years, have used DOS 6.22 through windows 3.1 to Vista, and Mac OS 9.0.1 to OS X 10.1.2..

i concur wholeheartedly with rich upsetter.. from a technical point of view, the mac gave me far more grief than the PC ever did.. it used to be that certain app's were definitely stronger on the Mac (the adobe suite, and audio app's such as Cubase spring to mind).. that is no longer the case.. everything available for the Mac is available for the PC, and thanks to the stability of recent microsoft OSes they are every bit as capable (and sometimes moreso) than their Mac OS counterparts..

however, the mac has become a more viable platform now that it is intel based, and one can install windows on it thanks to bootcamp.. i'm not saying rule OS X out entirely, just that any PC without windows installed is crippled imo..

and i don't want to hear a peep from you linux fags :grr:
