I thought I would signal boost the language courses at the University of Wolverhampton in Stafford. Not being entirely altruistic; I noticed their board outside had Japanese on it and went in to ask, as we are learning a bit at home.

They are currently booking French Spanish Portuguese, Italian and German but taking a name list for Japanese. So if you fancy it get your name down!

Having travelled around a bit I learned one line of several languages for runs ashore:

Asking for a beer:
French: une bière s'il vous plaît
Spanish: una cerveza por favor
German: ein Bier bitte
Klingon: KWA BE
Dalek: 00000001 00111000 110101010 11111111 (Give me a beer or be EXTERMINATED)

Only ever used the last two in the far east. Neither actually worked. :|

I don't know about Sake ... ?? The Japanese do a passable lager ... Kirin Lager. (For those purists bear in mind that at sea you got canned lager, regardless as this was the only way of buying and storing any kind of beer. I only ever sailed on one ship with draught beer, a Ben Line ship that did Europe - Far East permanent runs so was able to stock up in UK every three months or so. The draught beer was 'Double Diamond' :eek: ... it was like sailing on a sea going version of the Sheridan back in day.)

:sing: A Double Diamond works wonders works wonders A Doub ..... [BANG] ♪ :urgh:

(Thud as body hits ground.)

:pint::eek::facepalm:

Have drank that in China in 1972 !! Celebrating Mao Tso Tung !! (You sort of had to at the time as those Chinese made Kalashnikovs might have looked a bit rough and ready, but I suspect they could do the business.):eek:
