Had to smile this morning when during the BBC Midlands News report they reported traffic problems due to road works on the A518 in Knosall

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
I remember when the Colwich train crash happened and the BBC kept pronouncing is Colitch instead of Colewitch.

We have a lot of foreign speaking agency workers at St.Georges. All of them say Bass (as in the fish) Witch.

Did they say what they are actually doing. Bit chaotic this morning (having 4 way lights on the roundabout), but didn't seem to be any progress this evening except a load of water floating around

All the best

The BBC used to be very good about this sort of thing - years ago they had a pronunciation dictionary for 'difficult' names of places and people - but, it all seems to have fallen by the wayside lately.

Hi

Came through this evening and the traffic lights are gone. The small road up towards the Coop is closed other than access to frontages, with several holes dug up on the road there and quite a bit of water running down

All the best

The worst thing is when people say g - nosall with the emphasis on the g (not even a Gee sound) even some of those who had lived in the village for a number of years.

On another note it does make me chuckle when my sat nav tells me to turn off towards Eccles - Hall.

I was once asked for directions to Gonsall Forge by somebody who clearly thought it should be very near Norbury Junction and was rather sceptical about my suggestion that it was somewhere north of Cheadle....

Quite a long way round by boat, which at one time was just about the only option to get to the Black Lion unless you wanted to hitch a ride ona mineral train or take around a 2 mile walk down a lot of steps.

Over the years whenever I've taken anyone to the Black Lion for the first time, on almost every occasion I've had "How the (insert expletive of choice) did you find this place?"
