The better halves Lenovo B50-45 Laptop has started to hang immediately after turning on. The fans are still on but windows doesn't load up. We've turned it off, back on again, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When the laptop is selected to restart it also hangs.

Any thoughts as to the source ? Battery or charger perhaps ?

Thanks

When it "hangs", is there an image on the screen, or can you tell that the screen is lighting up? Highly HIGHLY unlikely to be a battery or charger fault. Usually it's imminent hard drive failure or similar. Sometimes it's just Windows way of saying "I need a fresh start".

I'd seen some info online about battery and charger issues on Lenovos... There's nothing on the display, no cursor or anything.... There appears to be a slight drop in fan speed. It's very hot and miss. I've refreshed Windows but not done anything about the drive....

My work Lenovo wouldn't power up at all a few weeks ago after I got caught in the torrential rain and our IT people asked me to press a tiny pinhole button down for 30 seconds.

The button is located next to the mains adapter input socket and I used a paperclip to press it in. Not sure what this resets but it may fix your problem.

In my case I got the next standard response from our IT, "replace the motherboard" and it's working again now.

Its unfortunately impossible to accurately diagnose without looking at it. However, if on occassion it boots and then can be used normally, then this is what makes me doubt PSU or battery issues.

If it has a removable battery, then take it out and try it on mains only. Then switch and try it on battery only. If the problem still exists both ways then you'll know that neither of those are the cause.
