Anyone know any good ones for the local / semi local / on the chase?

Or good guides?

We tried to follow one earlier in Eccleshall but got a little lost as it might have been have been a little outdated - although we did come across a pretty church in Elenhall so not a total loss of a walk.

I'm not sure how far you want to walk, I know you have little 'uns but I found a pack of walks in Shropshire on my bookshelf that I'm happy to post to you if you require. Think I picked them up int he tourist info a few years ago. Pretty sure the paths will still be in evidence and the routes up to date though. They are reasonably recent as they have email and website addresses on, printed by Shropshire County Council on nice glossy coloured leaflets named 'Family Friendly Walks". As the blurb says:

"These bold and colourful walk guides are specially designed to appal to family with young cildren. They are informative and fun with maps and written directions to help you find your way. most are circular walks and vary in distance from 1 to 3 miles. They start from sites with parking and many are pushchair friendly"

Like I say, PM me your address and I'm happy to post if they sound like what you're looking for

Completed this weekends lovely walk around Bishops Wood near Chipnall (near Cheswardine) in Shropshire Took about 2 1/2 hours and was very enjoyable albeit muddy. It was like Cannock Chase without the people/bikes/craziness. Very enjoyable. Not a walk from a leaflet, just an area our friends live very close to. All the dogs enjoyed themselves as well, Collie and a Ridgeback and our yampy 'lurcher' (I use the word loosely as no-one knows his breeding)! Thoroughly recommended if anyone is out that way and NO STILES! Happy days!

Now for an evening lazing on the sofa eating chocolate :D

The Wildlife Trust used to have an involvement with a wood just south of Loggerheads, that I seem to remember being called Bishop's Wood, though it's not on their list these days. - I did quite a few things there. We were there on the day of the Dunblane shooting, sitting in the Land Rover, trying to stop the blood from where I had slashed my nose with a briar, when the news came on the radio - not that I feel the need for an alibi....

It was largely about trying to get some butterfly to recolonise it, I think.

There had been a TB sanatorium there at one time, I believe.

The history lesson I had today leads me to believe that there are lots of Bishops Wood's around the area. Something to do with woods over 1000 acres having to pay some sort of tax so the Lordy owners split them in to woods of 995 acres! Even way back when the rich were playing the system to avoid tax!!! This partcular wood is approx 1 mile from Chipnall, near Lipley, south of the google map location you went to.

The previous owners of our house left a pile of these, over 20 walks of differing lengths, starting at half a mile, in Gnosall, Church Eaton, Ranton, Haughton, Bradley and Norbury. I can scan them if you like

Posh person's walk judging by the vehicles in the car park - Blithfield reservoir.

Good length walk . Mix of wooded and waters edge. Plenty of birdlife. Muddy, so no poncy trainers. Handy for the Goats Head Soup or Cobwebs.

Start in Newton Hurst Lane

Week 3 of our weekend walking today was around Hopton. We didn't have a route or leaflet, we just parked up by the bridleway (on the lane that runs alongside the MOD site 6 , Withins Lane?) between the Weston Road and the Sandon Road), walked along the bridleway to Salt, through Salt, and then picked up another footpath back up to Hopton. Took about 90 mins, shorter than I like, but it was parky at 9am this morning!!!

To anyone unsure of going on a DIY walk, may I recommend getting the ordnance survey map of the area which has 2 inches to a mile so loads of detail. Most of the footpaths locally are well signed, and with this type of map each field is annotated so it's easy to see where the path goes even if it's not obvious on the ground.

Loving both the exercise, the nature we see, and the time spent with my teenage daughter who is also enjoying the time away from studying. Dogs loves the walks too :)

It is Within Lane.

The 1/25,000 map is Sheet SJ 82/92 and it's nearer to 2½ inches to a mile.

Yes, all of that :D I couldn't be bothered to get off my warm cosy chair to confirm the details but you've provided the missing info!! Cheers

Within Lane is engraved on my memory - I once got a tiny bit of frostbite there, through holding a pen and checking names off a list on a very frosty morning.

It bloody hurt - like somebody poking my thumb with a lit match, once every heartbeat.

Lovely 5 mile circular this morning, starting at the back of No 4 army site, just off Sandon Road, along the bridleway for a couple of miles then round and back. Just typical Staffordshire pasture but a lovely walk none the less and we discovered a tiny little Zion chapel built in 1863 that I new knew existed!

Subject to confirmation, I suspect it starts here and runs northwards, the chapel being here.

I haven't done that path for many years - good to hear that it's not so badly obstructed as it used to be.

If you walk back following the road anti-clockwise, then it can be worth the slight detour to Martson Church
