Low Pitched Hum.

It's driving me mad and my partner can't hear it.

Every few days I hear a deep hum through the night. It sounds like a speaker left on but at a much deeper pitch. It disrupts my sleeping. Today I can actually hear it during the daytime which is a first.

I'm in Littleworth / Lichfield Road area. Can anyone else hear it? Please tell me it's a real noise and I haven't just got a bizarre tinnitus.

I feel sure there was a thread on this some years back, but I can't find anything.

There is a steady 24 hour drone from the motorway (when it's moving), which some people's heads filter out normally, except when they actually listen for it. That will be worse in the winter months and on still nights.

On nights with a steady breeze, you can get resonances from TV aerial masts...

Could it be coming from the last bit of the GE factory left standing - the Transformer Division just the other side of the Lichfield Rd / Riverway junction ? There is a bank of huge extractor fans on the side of the building the sound from which - if the wind was in the right direction - might travel across the Riverway playing fields towards Littleworth (?) I’ve been along Ranshaw Drive when they’ve been running and they make quite a din.

Plausible. It's been on and off for a while and I had assumed it was coming from a generator being left on there or on the fairway development overnight, but an extractor fan could do the same. I might go and have a mooch around closer to the factory and see if I can hear the same noise.

That's an interesting article, and one I came across when I first started hearing it and trying to figure out what it was. It doesn't mention that another common suggestion is that it's just a rare type of tinnitus!

I'd rather find out if it's a local generator issue before leaping into 5G conspiracy theories though!

We've been opposite that building for nearly 14 years and whilst there is a hum sometimes it's never kept us awake....
