Mundane facts about your day: Part Deux.

.
I've been summoned for jury duty! Anyone done it before? The possibility of having to hear upsetting details aside, I'm oddly looking forward to it, should be an experience.
I had a murder/ manslaughter case for a fortnight.
Worst part was the part I was expecting to be the best , in the Jury room all day at the end of the fortnight to get to a unamimous decision.
Had to pay for food & drinks we had in there ourselves ( might have changed now). I'd left my purse in my locker and wasn't allowed out to get it , so had to lend money off someone with change in their pocket for a cuppa.
Murder weapon was lying on the table we were sat around and came close to be used again as not all would agree on either Murder or manslaughter and close to ending up in Tillington Hall Hotel overnight ( locked in a room so couldn't talk to anyone). My first thoughts were " I should have stuck clean undies in my handbag" 😂

All the rest of my jury were called on another case the week after as well , but I'd told them I was aware of someone I knew up for
trial and I got sent home 😁

Oh...and don't be tempted to nip out of the actual court corridors to the loo if sent to wait outside courts for a recess.......I nipped out and couldn't get back in with a code on the door. Mad panic! Ran to the front door security who got me back in ,and got a right telling off for going out of the court part.
Just got back in time to save being done for contempt of court.

Have fun !

They refund your car parking and food allowance (as of about 4 years ago) now. Keep all of your receipts.

That's better now then. We only got travel costs & loss of earnings when I went ( was 27+ years ago though)

“Loss of earnings” when running a business sounds horrendous given how little they’d actually being paying out vs actual lost earnings for the business to me.

Think I’ll stick to doing everything I can to avoid it, personally. Haven’t been called up yet thankfully. They’d hate me anyway, depending on the case I’d probably end up being the one pushing for nullification

One woman on ours was paying her sister for childcare , so stuck it out until a few minutes to deadline so they could get more.

I walked there in deep snow , rather than relying on car or bus to get there in stuck traffic.

One lad on our jury lived in the Haywoods and his car broke down in the lanes en-route. With no mobiles those days , he had to thumb it & run a lot of the way to make it there. He arrived just seconds before the court was going to be halted through a a jury member was missing. Otherwise the days proceedings were going to be halted & he was about to be done for contempt of court.
I don't even know where the courts are here in Worcester. Hoping I don't ever need to find out!

That's what annoyed me, I'm on a 20hr contract, but work double in overtime......would they pay that? No, basic pay for my 2 weeks. I can't survive on that. Not realistic at all.

Recompense used to be generous years ago. I did jury service in Stafford about 45 years ago, had lunch every day in the Chinese that used to be around the corner the allowance was a couple of bob more than the three course "business lunch" cost. Full lost wages were paid and bus fares from Rugeley fully reimbursed.
I was called up again about 15 years ago and was shocked at changes, fortunately I wasn't selected, I would have been well out of pocket.

Think I'm going to ask to defer until later in the year. I'm still trying to get back on my feet, work-wise, since having to give up my active jobs after the accident so taking two weeks off in May might be detrimental if I've just got going and then have to stop again.

A mate who didn't want to do it loudly said "well he looks guilty as feck, this will be a quick one" when watching someone walk by in the court. He wasn't selected.

While we were waiting to go up to our court one day , a woman sitting waiting (not our jury) was announcing loudly that she could always tell straight away if someone was guilty or not on first sight. Anyone up in front of her wouldn't stand a chance if they didn't fall into her 'like' category.

I've been asked twice over the years and had to refuse on both occasions because of work. Now things are much more flexible in that respect I'd like to get asked again. Though with my luck I'd end up on a two year fraud case or something...

He'll be booking an exotic holiday just on your callouts. He'll certainly look after you.
I think he's well on his way to booking those flights..... new thermastat knob thingy fitted as the other one had sheared off (he reckoned it wouldn't have just fell off ....someone had overtightened the metal screw part in the past as it had all the broken plastic inside as well, and they'd have just placed the broken knob thingy on top in the hope it wasn't noticed during the sale. )

Then straight off to sons house to fix his leaks.

Mortifying thing was , I didn't know he was coming and my usually tidy house was a right mess :embarrass: with all my wet walking gear from this morning scattered about to dry out , the table piled with papers I'd got out to sort and then got distracted on here., along with the crisps packet I'd just finished scoffing when the door went. Thought he was the Amazon man that I'm expecting when the doorbell rang😂

He's a plumber.

He'll probably have made a few videos where he's turned up to houses and the woman's clothing is all over the place...

It's quite hard to get out of doing it,I tried as I'd done it before & even mentioned my loss of earnings, but they were having none of it. Fingers crossed for you

I got out of it first time as it was typically the busiest time (summer) at work. I got called back up the following winter though

Today has been a complicated day, lots of interconnected small events, some requiring me to leave the premises for short periods. I only have one thing left to do now.

I decided to stop and have something to eat before I do that, partly to 'reset' a little.

I spent rather longer than I would like to have moaning at myself just now, for having no keys in my pocket as I tried to enter the house via this lock.
