Why would you want to know the cost of a single egg when you buy them in boxes of 6s or 12s?
I wouldn't because I neither buy nor eat eggs but that might have been of interest when Home Economics was taught to girls at secondary schools.

When I was at Alleynes Comp, was back in 1977-1980. When we did any cooking in Home Economics, we had to break everything down. How much the flour had cost, eggs, sugar etc. I still do it these days when doing cakes.

"even though you would never seen a crown coin" except in 1965 when special ones were minted in commemoration of Winston Churchill. ,
I have one, which, amusingly, doesn't even mention that it is a crown, much less than it is five shillings.

There are places that sell eggs in boxes of ten these days.

Whereas nowadays "Five Pounds" is very clearly shown on the banknote featuring Winston Churchill.

I'm surprised that numerals, clearer than words, aren't used for the denominations of our current coinage.

Because of the train, Snowdon is always crowded during the Summer. This is May 2009. I drove up from Cornwall overnight, kipped a couple of hours in the back of my old Volvo, then shot up the Rhyd Du path to get the summit at 0730 hours. (Clear sky and still cold, hence all the gear.) I had it to myself except for one (hungry) seagull. Camera is placed on the summit pedestal looking West. The cluster of white buildings lower centre left is Rhyd Du, with sea mist coming up the Nantle Valley.
Then a slow walk down the Ranger path to make the pub in Rhyd Du just as it opened.

A few years back I camped at Rhyd Du. Brand new tent and my wife overdid it with the cider. We had to go and buy a new pillow and sleeping bag as a result. Good times.

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is a good mountain. There are lots of paths to choose from, from steady grinding walks to very hairy ridge walks. On a clear day (something of a rarity) the views are well worth the effort. I've never done the train, but that isn't meant as any form of criticism, it is what it is. (The one path I haven't walked is the long path up by the railway from Llanberis, just don't fancy it somehow.)
I can remember grinding up the Pyg Track in the 70's thinking of a nice cold pint in what was then the old Café on top, only to find the bar was closed (it was a Sunday .) I nearly ran amok !!! ... fortunately the Welsh wised up and did away with that nonsense.

Yes, cheques were only accepted in whole New Pence.
Aaah the days of the writing cheques out at the till, then having to write the cheque guarantee card number on the back , and sometimes name and address, with massive queues building up behind. Used to be a few groans when the customers in front pulled out a cheque book rather than their purse/wallet. ( I used to fill most of it in before I went shopping , then just add the amount and sign at the till. Others had to fumble around in their bags for cheque book and then stand writing it, with "what date is it?" etc )

Worked out very well for a few customers in Sainsburys though , when a pile of cheques once caught fire in the shop one evening before being sent to the bank. Was wishing I'd have gone in and done a massive shop that day .

A chap I worked with was sent to Venezuela on a job in the 1980s. He got quite pally with his hosts whilst he was there and one of them came over to see him. Knowing that he was interested in mountaineering, he took him to Snowdon one weekend. They trudged up it in the mist and arrived at the café, where the visibility was about ten yards.

"How much further is it to the summit?"

"This is it, to top of the highest mountain in England and Wales!"

"What? We wouldn't even give this a name!".

Well as a seasoned Venezuelan coastal trader I'd have taken him up in winter, in bad weather. He'd be shouting out some names then I bet (names like 'Holy Jesus get me out of here.') :P

I must admit to using taking train in 2015 ( with an afternoon spare in Llanberis having walked over the Devil's Kitchen from Idwal Cottage ) but have walked up previously, including in 1987.

Snowdon might not be much of a mountain to a Venezuelan but a couple of years ago I heard Chris Bonnington saying that as a lad it was the sight of Snowdonia from the train to and from Anglesey that got him interested in mountaineering.

Huge excitement here today.

I drove twenty five whole miles to the county town, an imposing metropolis, slightly bigger than Stone, where you can obtain almost anything known to man.

I drove back via a different route which had several miles of road with a 62mph speed limit - this seemed a lot faster than it was five months ago, when I last had that limit available.

I put half a tank of petrol in the car, again the first it's had since early November - it didn't really need it, but it's good to now the flap release still works.

I came back with everything that I went for (and more).

And still half the day left.

Don't know what it is with my deliveries , I've got 2 whacking big house numbers on both the porch and garage . Luckily was watching the vans journey around the estate, with drop offs getting closer and closer. Tracking message comes on Laptop screen saying mines the next drop-off. Van pulls up on the pavement , so I got ready by the door....... Had to intercept him half way down my neighbours drive yet again !
