Loads of fellas in hi-viz jackets roaring around, lorry blocking the road, loads of banging and shouting...

No it wasn't a riot! ...

The blue bins have arrived! Whoopee!

Thought you were going to say it was the invasion of National Grid who have been working their way round replacing gas mains, causing general chaos, turning the roads into interesting obstacle courses, and demanding access to your house at a couple of days notice!!

Its all a conspiracy, you know. By making you sort your own rubbish out it makes it easier for the council to sell for recycling.

And where does all the recycled plastic go? Into making new bins! Next year we'll be getting red bins for bio-hazardous waste, yellow bin for nuclear material, pink bins for dead animals and purple/yellow/blue striped giant telephones for the disposal of unwanted halucinogenics.

Caution. One of those statements is true.

It pisses me off that they're using the brown bins to get a load of free fertiliser for Council parks, gardens etc. Plus, as I understand it, with the advent of the blue bins, you'll be able to put shredded paper in the brown ones. Shall we recycle paper to make more paper goods? Nah, let's put it on the flower beds.

But no one is forcing you to let the council have it... you are perfectly free to put it in your own compost bin if you want to.

Ultimately its saving the tax payer money by recycling because it costs the council less in landfill charges, plus it helps the environment...

With regards your point on shredded paper, from what I understand, shredded paper can't be recycled to make new paper products because shredding the paper cuts up the fibres in the paper too much... so all these people who stuff their paper recycling with shredded paper are wasting their time....

What gk141054 said. And remember, council parks and gardens are *our* parks and gardens too.

February for the blue bins in Castletown. We're so close to the Chell Road recycling centre, they won't make that much difference anyway, so I presume that's why we're last on the list.

Remember to put a little of Chairman Moa's mixture on it! If you missed the previous thread on the matter ... p*ss on it! Easier for gentlemen than the ladies.

I really like the fact that our garden waste gets composted into stuff for the council. We have our own domestic compost bin too but it's handy having a home for some of the larger stuff to go.

We live right next to the recycling banks at the back of Oxford gardens so it won't make too much difference to us either.

Oh and shredded paper is very good for compost, as is scrunched up newspaper - it distributes pockets of air as the compost matures, making for healthy compost,

I notice no one has given a handy leaflet of recycling ideas for the old green box .. any suggestions (save tool storage or a planter)

I just want a smaller waste bin - about the size of a green box!

That big green wheelie thing is far too big now and takes up too much room.

I wish! 4 blokes live in my house, all working different hours etc. and so eating seperately every night. We easily fill our green bin every week, and the sheer randomness of the recycling put us off ages ago. At least now we'll have a proper collection, that may actually turn up and even take what we put out, hopefully we'll see an improvement.

yeah, the blue bins arrived at weeping x today, complete with noisy ceremony as described by gon2seed.. i have to say, despite me being an ardent hippie-botherer, i can see these things actually encouraging me to recycle!

i barely have enough space in my regular bin as it is at the moment, but previously i dug my heels in vis-a-vis recycling because i'm way too lazy to remove caps/labels/sort glass/etc, not to mention having to carry the box up the drive (never gonna happen).. now i can just chuck anything vaguely recycleable into the blue bin, and wheel it up with minimum effort.. job done..

what a bizarre point of view.. why on earth would you begrudge the council your waste, if they can do something with it?? it's not like you even have to use it - they don't impose penalties for non-usage (like they are talking about doing with recycling).. if you don't like it, just ignore the bin (like i do).. surely they are doing you a favour by providing extra space for your garden waste, so it doesn't tie up your normal bin? if they can make use of it, more power to them :?:

It ultimately saves the council money because they can sell your rubbish more easily.

Really, I'm not joking.

I'll get the the info on the price-per-ton they're getting.

shredded paper, soak, mashed, compressed, and left to dry makes excellent firebricks.

should you want to chuck a bit more carbon out and get tid of this terrible cold.

my dad was doing this in the 70s.... so its all his fault.

Bloody hell. How much time do they think we have to go sorting through our rubbish. AND it probably gets shipping to sodding China anyway. It's just not cricket.

Meanwhile, cost of sending stuff to landfill is going up, amount of landfill space available is getting ever smaller.

Yeah - I was surprised when Hubby said ours had turned up last night - very smart looking. It means we can free up some room in our kitchen where the green box lives.
