I rang round but no one answered their phones. So I carried out scouting the field for my keys , I found them ! I really do need to get a spare set done . That’s the plan for today :xd:

I lost several sets of keys, so I bought a tile. Not lost them since!

Got Mrs T one a few years ago. Has saved me many hours looking under chairs, in odd drawers etc etc.

I’d never heard of a tile so I’ve just googled it.
Husband is always losing things so it would be an ideal gift for him.
I’ve just got a bit confused because there seems to be different options available.

Can anyone explain how they work and which would be the best option please?

For example, if you wanted to find wallet and keys would you need to buy two tiles?

Yup, one tile per device. I got an offer on a 4 pack of the mate ones with replaceable batteries, so there is one on my main and spare car keys plus one on the house key set that has the bike lock ones on too (yes, I have 3 sets of keys!). The 4th was spare so it's in the dashboard of the car, in case I forget where I parked :shifty:

They work by the app knowing how far away they are (bluetooth signal strength), this way it can work out where you lost them by the last time they were close by. Obviously the app needs to be always running. If you do lose them you can ask other tile members to have a look for them, effectively everyone elses app looks for that tile nearby. If found you get told where, nobody else sees this or even knows they are looking. As an idea of popularity there are apparently over 200 other tile users in the wider Stafford area at the moment:

One really annoying thing with the tile is it won't do something it's easily capable of without a subscription - tell you that you're losing something! If you pay a monthly fee it can tell you when a signal gets weak/lost, alerting you that you're walking away from your keys. This could save a lot of time, but I already paid plenty for the devices I'm not paying more for functionality it should really have. I guess they need to fund the finder network somehow but the cost seems high for what you get.

I once had what I thought was a good system for getting back into the house, if I locked myself out.

I had someone else's front door key hanging up, slightly hidden, in my porch. It would be easily found by a seasoned burglar, but of little use to them, as the lock it fitted was a quarter of a mile away. My key was hanging in a similar location in their porch. Either of us could obtain our own key at any time without needing to bother the other person at all.

It seemed like a good, practical method, but then they moved away.

The other location does need to be a good way away and not a place that you might be noted as being strongly associated with.

We did once have a steady series of burglaries in the vicinity, all clearly done by somebody with extremely detailed local knowledge. It turned out to be someone who had moved across town a year before...

I have keys to my sisters home, as does she for here, along with the eldest and his gf. Them no problem, less than 2 minutes walk.
Sister, 30 mins drive.

So if I buy the one with four tiles and put one on wallet, one on keys, one on phone etc.
Then what?
You have an app?
What happens if you lose one of those items?

How does it know that you’ve lost it? How does it tell you where it is?
I’m rubbish on gadgets and technology so anything specific would be really helpful thanks.

There are different types of tile, the ones I got are more keyring. There are slim ones to go in wallets, and sticker type dots for other applications, neither of which I've used.

The idea is the app tells you the rough area you lost them (or another users app spotted them), and then you go there and look in your app. When close enough to get a bluetooth signal yourself you can 'ring' your tile, so it makes a noise guiding you the last part of the way.

In practice I've only ever used it in the house, so already in range. You click the tile you're after and it makes noises, telling you that your keys were in the first place you checked but not well enough!
