I only recently got a smart phone for Christmas - before that I was touting this beauty:

It texted and called - exactly what I wanted it to do...

My phone is even older. I get laughed at in work cos I can't do Facebook on it, kikking, whatssapp or whatever it is. I charge mine twice a week, whether it needs it or not.

I hate touchscreen stuff. I only use my wifes phone or nexus to install stuff for her.
my phone is an old nokia which only has phone/text function. it's all I need from a phone.

i'm not a fan of any apple stuff, other than the design of it. my lads have iphones, ipads. I just don't want to know about them. I give them the music they want but leave them to sort it, I hate the iTunes software.

I'd hate to use one of those phones again. In fact the last time I tried to use one, I gave up.

ahh yes, pause-break dialling as I knew it. At one time you could simply "tap out" a phone number on some private payphones as a way of avoiding putting coins in. :)

And then I remember tone dialling coming in, and you could buy some tone generating keyrings which you could hold to the mouthpiece of public payphones which worked too for some time.
Great memories :)

If they locked it in that position you'd still be able to dial numbers.

The lock should be in the number 1.

True. Only picture I could find of a dial-lock.

There used to be arguments about preventing people from dialling 999 - so, when 112 appeared, you could put the lock in the 2 hole and people could still dial 112 in an emergency, if they actually knew that number.....

They could still dial any numbers which only contained 1s and 2s, such as Waterstones in Stafford - 222212.

I remember that because I found it on my 1471 once and it sounded like a roadie doing a sound-check.

Rikki that is the problem people who buy Laptops want a Laptop not a tablet, one of the problems with modern Laptops and i have seen is since Windows Vista is the hardware if you want a budget Laptop you are going to mostly get something that just about has enough ram to operate with a CPU thats just about capable of running Windows, the end result is you buy a Laptop that is not fit for purppose and you will soon realize just how slow and just how laboured trying to do anything other than checking emails or browsing the internet is.

All I personally want from a laptop is Web browsing and being able to watch videos. I would guess a fair percentage of people don't use them for much more which is why they are built like you describe.

For actual work I would and do choose a desktop as I don't think any laptop is as easy/comfortable to use. As I built mine primarily as a gaming pc it has plenty of power along with a decent quality mouse and keyboard. I am aware though that if you could only have one computer and needed a laptop then most of the cheaper ones sold today would not be ideal.

I must be alone in quite liking Windows 8 - but then I have a touchscreen laptop and all my apps are synced and connected so it makes a lot of sense
